Manifold blanket

I'm getting boiling of the fuel in my newly fitted HIF6's. The summers here in NJ can be fairly hot (29C-33c) and i've found that I'm getting spitting from the float vents when I stop after highway speeds and I'm waiting in traffic. I have a 2200TC heat shield fitted, its in good condition with no cracks or missing parts. However, the manifold is pretty close to it. I think with the float chambers on the HIF's being at the bottom of the carb it heats up pretty quickly once the airflow stops.

Has anyone tried the manifold blankets? I don't want to wrap the manifold as I know it holds in water and can cause premature rusting of the manifold. Would the looser fitting blanket be a better solution do you think?

This is one of the candidates: http://www.amazon.com/Thermo-Tec-14004- ... er+blanket

I'm also adding extra heat insulation to the heat shield on both sides.

Please help as I'm about ready to go back to the HS8's at the moment. I've had so much trouble with the new setup.

Cheers,

Steven

Wrapping the upper part of the manifold shouldn't cause any water absorption grief. But before that, if there is room you could try adding a sheet of aluminum underneath the existing heat shield, spaced away from the heatshield as far as you can get it with some standoffs. Depending on the air gap, you could as much as double the shield effectiveness.

Does your heat shield have the "curtain" at the edge that extends down about 3 or 4 inches?

Yours
Vern

Thanks for the reply Vern. Yes, it does have the curtain. I'll see about the blanket availability first and I will be putting extra insulation on the heat shield too

So, I believe this is my problem too. NJ has 10% ethanol (corn based alcohol) too. There's a good video of someone having this very issue in their lawn mower here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfm6DrB0eV8

I managed to add some extra insulation to the heat shield and I've noticed a big improvement on the heat of the float bowls. Not had a chance to take her out for a proper test drive but I feel a bit better about it. If this doesn't work I may have to go back to HS8's as they are a little more heat tolerant.

Here's the insulation I added: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00029 ... ge_o02_s00

And here's it applied to both sides of the heat shield:

Can you get ethanol free fuel in NJ? You can here in upstate NY, and it sells very well. Fastrac, and Stewarts sell ethanol free gas. I do not know how far down state you can get ethanol free fuel, it might be worth asking around if there is some close to the NY NJ border.

James.

Apparently not legal to sell non ethanol fuel in NJ now. One of the joys of a dodgy state govt from what I understand. Good idea about NY though. Unfortunately the nearest point for NY for me is New York City, so hello super expensive fuel!

I did some research the other day and it seems I'm a good 40 miles from the nearest station. So I will use them when I'm close but may have to deal with the E90 stuff the rest of the time.

Just an update on the heat shielding I used. Last month I took Beryl up to Lime Rock for the historic weekend. 250 miles in 91 deg F heat. Highway speeds followed by traffic and she didn't miss a beat. I think I have her fixed. I just need to sort those pesky bimetal brackets next. On super hot days they seem to lean off the mixture at idle so much she runs very rough. Now we are in Autumn she seems to be purring nicely.

Do you get lpg over there? It may be a better bet than "gasoline" if it contains too much ethanol.. Don't know about the 4 pot but the v8s like it.
