Hi all.
Well after selling the VERY early 1970 Rover P6 S2V8,chassis no;27, and the solid 1964 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller fairly quickly, the inevitable happened!!!
I GOT REALLY BORED!!!
So I decided to look about for an on the road solid british car that I could tinker with as and when my chemo treatment allows me to,as some days I am fine, others totally knackered!
And its on those fine days I get itchy fingers to play with cars!
What should pop up just 10m down the road and on Ebay,but a 1968/9 Rover P6 S1 3500!! :)
I say 1968/9 as it was registered early 1969 and could be a 1968 build, yet to find out!
TBH! I had been after getting an S1 for a while! :),as I have a picture in my head of how I want one to look once restored! :D
Phonecalls made, chatted about its good and bad bits, what price he will/wont sell for,and arranged a viewing.
It seems it was restored in 1992 with S2 panels, and a fine job was done according to the pics in the large history folder with it!
Still got to read through all of it to see whats what!
Anyway,at the viewing!!!
He has had it 4 yrs and done just over a 1000 miles,he paid £1500 for it and has spent about the same on it,as he got any work done at a local classic MG garage, and its been kept dry garaged in his ownership.
Its structurally solid in all the right places,4 new tyres fitted when he bought it,has had the brakes overhauled, but needs handbrake adjusting properly,"new cable,2 new rear hoses supplied",got 2 tote bins full of nos and s/h parts, full stainless small bore exhaust fitted not long ago.
Outside looks scabby, and engine bay is not the prettiest,so will eventually need resto, drives excellent, eng and box really great, interior very nice, but seats will benefit from a clean and feed, and could do with a replacement drivers seat as base leather is split, and carpets not the best.
So the deal was done and I drove it home!
A good tinker with it over the weekend will see me knowing it a bit better, and making a long list of jobs to do,and any parts needed!
If I keep this one?? and I hope I do, ,my long term plan is to strip off all the panels, overhaul the base unit, clean and paint all the suspension, clean and detail the engine and box plus all engine bay fittings, fit new carpets and furflex, real wood inserts, refurbish the toledo red seats, fit static grey irvin rear seatbelts, fit grab handle, tacho and clock pod, full set of mudflaps, black Tudor webasto,14" rostyle wheels, and paint it April yellow.
Ive started a photo album with pics from the ad,and will add more as I take them.

As I hope it will look like!

Re: Pilkies new P6 project!,,, A 1968/9 S1V8

nice project, at 10m down the road you were mad not to.

April yellow would be awesome, what colour will your interior be ebony?

If you can find the optional s1 door trims it'd save you welding the holes in the doors...

Looks really nice. Nice find :)

Re: Pilkies new P6 project!,,, A 1968/9 S1V8

Were the thin ones optional or just for export?

Supposedly available as an option on the home market. None too common there though. Might be able to pick up a set on your trip to NZ though.

Nice one Dave! That would be a hard one to resist. I think the SI 3500's are my favourites of the V8's. Nicely understated, and supreme grand touring cruisers.

Maybe check out some North American sources. You might be able to pick up the thin NADA style side strips.

Re: Pilkies new P6 project!,,, A 1968/9 S1V8

Will have to think about that???
They would make it look S2 at 1st glance, and S1's are known for the plain sides!

Re: Pilkies new P6 project!,,, A 1968/9 S1V8

iirc they're slightly different to the export ones. Might be mis-remembering though.

Re: Pilkies new P6 project!,,, A 1968/9 S1V8

For now the plan is to do away with the side strips.
My thanks to a fellow P6 owner,Andries Griede who has come up with a full set of S1 interior chrome door/winder handles and a V8 tacho.
Anyone got a good toledo flat pleat drivers seat? S1 or 2!

Re: Pilkies new P6 project!,,, A 1968/9 S1V8

Oh, you bought that one. Looked like a nice car, but what's going on with that inner wing behind the lights on the passenger side, it looks a bit weird?

Re: Pilkies new P6 project!,,, A 1968/9 S1V8

Inner wing pic is an old pic!
All inner wing has now been repaired also a new inner wing hockeystick fitted about 1 yr ago!
1st job is to clean and repaint the inner wings and front panel satin black to tidy it up for now!
Lower valence is black stonechipped,if I can find a can of white paint,I will tart it up.

Great find, congratulations Dave!

Re: Pilkies new P6 project!,,, A 1968/9 S1V8

All.
I have set myself a realistic resto budget, inclusive of the purchase price,to complete the work I want to do!
How long it will take is in the lap of the gods,re finances and my health issues allowing, but at least it is all road legal till Aug 14.
I may do something wacky with the paintwork, till I am ready for a proper paintjob!
Now how many colour spraycans have I got???

Heres a thought for a bit of fun???
If you have some unused cans of spraypaint,in your shed/garage.
Send them to me,message me for my address.
Pick a panel on the P6 and I will paint it!
I will leave the roof white,so thats 16 panels to paint and all will have to be different colours or shades of colour!
Just remember what paint you send should be just enough to do the panel you choose!!
It wont be a Rembrant, more of a rat look Joseph!!

Re: Pilkies new P6 project!,,, A 1968/9 S1V8

A nice dry sunny but crisp day saw me popping over to our local common to my favourite photoshoot spot,to snap a good few pics of the cars pre resto condition.
It does look good in the sun at 50ft away, but get up close and personal, and every panel has its issues!
As promised here are a few piccys!
You maybe able to zoom in on the pics if you know how to!
Piccy linky thingy!

Re: Pilkies new P6 project!,,, A 1968/9 S1V8

After a couple of days getting to know the car better, theres nothing mechanically or structurally that cant be fixed in a lazy weekends work! :D
The handbrake needs sorting out,"all pads are good",and there are 2 sections on the base unit,1 either side on the floor-sill area that need a decent 6" square plate welded in,as the metal use there was crap!
On removing the outer sills which was easily done,it showed that although not pretty, and after a bit of a whacking with my panel hammer,it showed good solid weld repairs have been done and well undersealed!
No doubt as I dig the rusty bits out it will spread a bit,but going on what I can see and experience of P6's in the past it wont run much deeper!
The p/o did say that he removed the outers annually, gave them a waxoil with black underseal, and it shows!

Tomorrows job is to sort out why the modern techno cd mp3 radio wont hold channels, that will be the memory power to sort!
And paint the inner wings black,as its the worst visual part of the car!
