My project... Now MOTed!! ... Again..

Re: My project... Now MOTed!!

I do need to retard the timing, (it is set to the standard, 6deg BTDC), so I'll do that tomorrow The book suggests a setting of TDC for octanes 96-99. (My engine's a 10.5:1 compression ratio, 451 with A prefix.) To be fair though, yesterday was really the first time the old girl really stretched her legs; did a prolonged run for 90miles on the motorway at a constant 70-75mph, which was sustained for about an hour, at the end of which I switched it straight off when I got home. That's the only time I've seen the exhaust tip grey inside. The car normally has sooty dark brown/black deposits inside the exhaust when just running normally around town/locally. I am running it with Millers VSP at the moment too. The engine sounded wonderful when I got back. I'll richen it up a bit as well as the timing, cos the engine does seem to struggle on hills, with pinking & poor acceleration; as you say, petrol is less expensive than valves.. I've also previously took off those K&N filters, and have been running it with the standard air box with the correct paper filters fitted ever since the MOT, so if it is lean, it shouldn't be very lean, hopefully. And also, hopefully it's probably now burnt off any carbon deposits built up from 3 years of shunting it in & out of the garage.

Re: My project... Now MOTed!!

As far as i know you need to set the mixture again when you change the timing so you may not need to over-richen the needles anyway....

Rich.

Re: My project... Now MOTed!!

I'll check it with the lift pins tomorrow, also, I need to check what oil is in the SU dashpot dampers, I haven't got a clue whats in there at the mo, but it does look suspiciously like engine oil.. As I don't know, I'll just replace it with the correct grade.

Re: My project... Now MOTed!!

I've reset the timing to as close to TDC (dialled it in to TDC on the light, then tweaked the dizzy til it was strobing a tiny amount on the "before" side of the TDC marker) and the funny thing is, everything just kinda fell into place. The tickover was spot on 650rpm, (using my DVM's tacho setting), and when I lifted the SU lift pins, the revs just increased very slightly, then settled again; both carbs doing the same. I think this is pretty close to as good as it gets now. Took it for a run, and WOW! so much more power, its unreal :D No more pinking, pulls like a train up steep hills, and now really responsive. I could not believe the difference tweaking the timing made, it was pretty pathetic on steep hills before; pinking like whatnot, but not now.

The great thing about the Pertronix setup too, is that you can achieve a very smooth, steady, low tickover, without it seeming to want to stall. The tickover speed was initially about 600rpm, this was after sitting there ticking over while I did the timing. Tightened everything up, went for a spin, and it was about 650 when I got back. Left ticking over, it will creep back down to 600rpm after a while, but no slower. I'm well chuffed now 8)

Re: My mothballed P6 -

After 3 years of sitting in my overcrowded shed ,using her as storage for all and sundry .
Covered in dust cloth and taken out occasionally to keep her fluids alive.
GZ1677 now has a brand new Warrant of fitness "WOF"
Same as your Brits MOT
Ive put in a few hard yards to get her ready for road legal.
Ive been for a few blats without a WOF or registration but felt my number would roll over soon and I'd get picked up.
The guys at the local WOF centre had never seen a P6 before - yes true. They were all in their 30's and saw mostly jap and american cars.
They were all over it like a rash . They didnt believe the V8 was standard issue and looked at putting a low volume sticker on it .
A LTSA [nz land transport agency] mainline computer check soon made their jaws drop.
Every thing came under curious scutiny
Got the Wof and am looking forward to some great summer cruising .
Just the a/c to get regassed .
AAh that V8 !!

Re: My project... Now MOTed!!

Well done! There's nothing like the sound of a nice V8... 8) :D
Aircon? Whats that then....  Only joking, I've got it too... Its the manual type you have to wind down yourself.... :D

Re: My project... Now MOTed!!

Totally agree with the timing issue, completely different car when it's right. Exactly as you say, quicker more responsive etc. Now get out and drive it. Happy days. Mick

Re: My project... Now MOTed!!

Well, following my rear suspension (turned out to be exhaust) rattle, my new stainless steel tailpipe section arrived from a certain parts supplier in Doncaster today, (Thanks Ian) so tomorrow I will be mostly playing with that. The exhaust that was on the car is proper P6 up to the final joining flange over the de dion, but had a b*stardized VW Vento tailpipe fitted at the rear. I've compared the 2 against each other and there is quite a difference, so hopefully my exhaust troubles will be over.. for a very long time... :)

Re: My project... Now MOTed!!... Or not...

Well, I've had a year of (relatively) trouble free motoring, several thousand miles clocked up, so it's MOT time again. It was to be done this morning, but I was checking the car over before the test and found the brake lights weren't working. Problem traced to the switch, which was found with one of its leads hanging with the remnants of a spade connector from the switch in the end. The spade had corroded badly & broken off. Brake lights were working ok a few weeks ago when I checked the lights, so I may have been out a few times without them working..
Anyway, it didn't fail the test, because it didn't go for the test, so that's a bonus I suppose. New brake switch ordered, and I'll take the opportunity to pull the alternator and change the oil pressure switch at the same time, as it's been intermittent. (Checked gauge is ok by shorting lead). So no more Rovering in the sun for a few days...

Re: My project... Now MOTed!! ... Or not... :-(

Sorry to hear that you weren't able to MOT your Rover. My brake light switch has failed twice. Seems to be something that happens with quite a degree of regularity with new brake light switches. The one I've got in the car at the moment has been there for six months or so, and it's been absolutely fine! Hope your car is back on the road again soon. I'm certainly really missing driving mine!

Re: My project... Now MOTed!! ... Or not... :-(

Hope you get sorted and MOTd soon. My MOT is in June and I reckon having it in the middle of the year (summer if you can call it that) is a hassle. Even though mine passed in June, I am tempted to put her in for another MOT in November. That way I could fix any problems when JVY is off road for the winter and not have to worry about MOTs when I should be out driving. Also means, if she fails, there's no rush to get the work done.

A few times over the years, I have done a last minute check over cars before taking them for MOT and found a bulb is knack'd when I was sure they were all working the week before  . Of course, it's usually some obscure number plate lamp that I don't have any spares for  .

Re: My project... Now MOTed!! ... Or not... :-(

I did think about doing that, but was wondering whether it would upset the new electronic "system"..

Anyhoo, thanks to a very fast turnaround, my brake switch, which was only ordered yesterday morning, turned up this morning, and its a NOS genuine Lockheed unit, still in the box, so hopefully it'll be a bit better quality than some of the newer ones. Time to get my hands dirty. I'm assuming the brakes will need bleeding afterwards too..
