My project... Now MOTed!! ... Again..

Re: My project... Now MOTed!! ... Or not... :-(

As Harvey said . I did mine a few months back , just make sure you have everything to hand for the quick swap

Re: My project... Now MOTed!! ... Or not... :-(

Yep, managed a slick, quick change, only dripped 1 or 2 drops. Brake pedal feels fine after. Wonder what's going to pack in next....

The joys of driving 40+ year old cars... The joy far outweighs the pain though.. :D 8)

Well, its in for it's MOT this morning, but not without something else packing in... Fired it up this morning, all ok, then the rev counter stopped working :( Couldn't believe it.. It's been fine all year. I'm pretty sure that's not part of the MOT though, so hopefully all will be well. Fingers crossed...

Exactly so! And that rev counter should keep the old grey matter ticking over for a day or two, not to mention the joints supple straining to see up under the dash....

Good Luck this morning!

Re: My project... Now MOTed!! ... Or not... :-(

Rev counter is not part of the test. It electronic or mechanical (cable driven)?

Re: My project... Now MOTed!! ... Or not... :-(

They're driven by pulses from the coil I think. Presumably you've bashed the top of the dashboard to see if that makes it work?

It passed! :D
Did have 3 advisories though, but 2 of them made no sense at all to me.

1) Brake fluid level near the minimum level - It was only about 1/4" below the max, but I will top it up & keep an eye on it

2) Front suspension mounting area repaired but not inappropriately.. What on earth is that supposed to mean? I mean, thats good isn't it? I'm confused..

3) Rear Suspension mounting area repaired but not inappropriately.. As above.. :?:

New one on me... :?: I mean, I'd be surprised if a 41 year old car hadn't been "repaired".

Anyway, it passed, thats the main thing..

I do wonder with the new electronic test though, whether they are forced to select fixed phrases from a list, I mean it had a 4 digit code next to it too; it smacks of standard phraseology, like last year, when my hazard flasher wasn't working, the phrase used was "hazard warning lights not flashing in phase". They weren't flashing at all...

Anyhoo... Another year of Rovering to look forward to... And Petworth's coming up not too far away.. 8)

Well done on the pass . You can always repair it inappropriately again when the time comes :D

Or not....

{quote="rockdemon"]Nice work. Sounds like the tester has a strange turn of phrase....[/quote]

Weird thing is, its the same tester that passed it without any advisories last year... And that was after my NOT inappropriate repairs...

Just not a fan of advisories... Especially when they're silly ones  as I believe they're recorded on the "system"

Probably some a*se covering going on...

He's probably covering for the fact that he does not know much/anything about the model and therefore
something that looks out of kilter but may not be is therefore given an advisory just in case
it actually fails.

I think the advisories issue has more to do with the MOT centre not having Vosa and the like breathing down their necks. I was told that if a garage wasnt deemed to be issuing enough advisories questions would be asked such as " They cant all be passing with flying colours, surely?"
When I took my Scim in last year it failed with advisories and when I took it back for the retest it passed with two more advisories than when it failed.... Considering i hadnt done more than 20 miles in the car from its failure to its eventual pass I found that all rather odd
The funniest thing was the advisory for front wheel bearings having "slight play", I mean it was a Scimitar built with inherently greater tolerances not a bleedin 2005 Zafira , was it!
Mind you the fella testing the car wasnt actually born when the car came off the production line, GOD I felt ancient!!

Scimitar front wheel bearings should have slight play as should P6's as they are taper-rollers
No play equals seizure !

Well, this hot weather has highlighted a few electrical gremlins, primarily with the rev counter. Its an RVI type, and did kinda work ok with my pertronix setup until you got up through the revs a bit, although it was a bit wandery, and had to be replaced once when my original one packed up. The recent hot weather seems to have sent it a bit bonkers though, reading 6500rpm at tickover. I've got a spare RVC type rev counter, which I understand works much better with electronic ignition setups. I saw a thread on here about it, Link here, and it looks like an easy enough job to do, so will be having a go at it tomorrow.. watch this space... :D
