Gentlemen,

The cold weather has finally killed my Battery off, I cant complain as I have had the car nearly five years and it was fitted when I bought it, can anybody point me to a national supplier who make one which will fit the hole in the boot of a Series 1 V8 please.

Take the battery box out and take it with the clamp to a supplier with a good stock and get one to fit.

I dont know about V8's, but mine has an 075 fitted. (60 Amp hours and cca of about 620 amps). Just replaced mine and it fits like a glove with no mods. Any good battery stockist should have one :)

Gentlemen,

Battery failed on sunday night, I am a service engineer so hoped I might pick one up before I get back home on Friday night as have been away all week.
Will have to leave until weekend.

I got an Optima redtop from Paddocks 4x4 spares. It fits in the battery box well, and it can be left for months without recharging. Pricey though, but I fitted mine a year or so ago, before my garage was built, and I left the car under a tent in the garden from October to April without even looking at it, and the battery started the car after being stood for 6 months without charging or jump leads. They say you can leave them outside for a year, and still start a car with it. I opted for one of these as I will probably hibernate the car over winter, and don't want any battery sulphating problems. Like I said, expensive, but I've been very pleased with it. It'll cold crank a V8 with no problems at all. :p

Is the Optima Redtop shaped correctly to enable the original battery box frame and lid to be fitted?

Mmm, good point. My car hasn't got the lid fitted as yet, (its not on the road..), but the battery sits in the box ok. I'll give it a try tomorrow, so we'll see. I think it may require a little work, but I can't see why it can't be made to fit with very little work. I'll let you know.

Well, with a very slight mod to the battery frame (I used an old spare one) in the area marked on the pic, to accomodate the battery handle, the frame fits over the battery. I don't think the battery is quite as tall as standard, I simply put a bit of wood under it to lift it slightly, but here's a pic:

The only thing I haven't got is a pair of threaded hooks to hold it down (anyone got a spare pair?) but I'm quite happy with the fit so far. The lid fits perfectly over the top. You could take the handle off the battery quite easily, so you don't have to modify the frame, but then you'd need a means of lifting it out of the box. Hope this helps..

There is a means of lifing it out of the box on every P6 with the battery in the boot......

Really ?
When the battery is stuck in the box and the box is stuck in the car ?
I suppose you could push it up through the hole in the bottom of the box?

I'd be worried about breaking the battery and getting an acid shower
My method is 2 lengths of stiff wire , attach them to the battery terminals with jubilee clips , and then pull

Hi, I use a length of seatbelt webbing pop-riveted or stitched into a loop around the
battery (widthways) and thus doesn't interfere with the frame.

Why not use one piece between the two terminals?

A word of caution using gel cells and redtop optima's, these are a low impeadance battery and are the bees knees how ever due to there low impeadance can suck more from the alternator than it was intended to deliver and can burn out your alternator in fairly short order. Some alternators (or alternator regulators) are built to stand this others may not , I dont know where the ACR stands with this regard.
The feature of the low impeadance is fantastic in that not only does the battery recharge fully very very quickly but the cranking voltage remains high in comparison to standard flooded cells which ensures a quick starter motor turn over and also higher volts available for the ignition system too.
I would be keen to see if the ACR stands up to the challenge of charging the gel cell battery.

Gentlemen,

Its been a while since I asked question, I went to Halfords with the old battery spec and tape measure and found a direct replacement at what I considered a good price. I fitted it and started the car, I didnt realise the engine could spin over so fast :D
My brother builds off road trialers and has recently gone away from the V8 to a Rover 827 V6 and has given me his spare engine and a later type starter which he tell me spins the engine a little quicker aiding starting.
Again thanks for help.
