Thanks again for the information guys. Definitely think a battery isolator would be a good idea especially if I'm only using it at weekends. Should stop the battery draining at all.

That's a lot of places to check for rust! Haha I'll try to remember, but I feel that I might need to borrow an experienced P6 owner near any car I'm going to look at in order to make sure I'm not given a dog!

Yes I still think the P6 is one for me! Modern enough to be not too difficult to live with (at least as a toy) yet classic enough to be beautifully simple. I might have to spend a bit more time saving the pennies in order to make sure I can get something pretty decent. Heading to the Classic Motor Show at the NEC in November so hopefully I'll find a P6 club stand and get a chance to look over the cars in more detail!

I notice that you're not too far from the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon where we will be having our National Show there on Sunday 9th August.
It won't cost you anything to come as a visitor and you will get to see many P6's and other classics. We normally have in excess of 100 P6's.

The next show we will be at is the Mid Lincs Rover Rally at East Kirkby Aviation Centre on Sunday 12th July where we have a Club Stand. This is an excellent Rover show with 300 - 400 vehicles and exhibitors gain free entry into the museum (details on our website).

We have a Club stand at the Manchester Classic Car Show, Event City, Manchester on 19th & 20th September and also at the NEC Classic Motor Show in November.

You will be made welcome at any of our shows whether you are a member or not and you will get the chance to look at a wide variety of P6's with expert advice.
Our youngest member is now almost 20 but joined us when he was 17.

I fitted a battery isolator switch on the earth lead on my MGB and isolated my clock, radio and interior light from the normal earth and gave clock, radio and interior light a separate earth wire.Had to fit a relay to make the light of the clock work.

I use a P5B as my daily car for 1 year now and clocked approx. 10.000km. As more people already stated, i bought a car with MOT and a good body work and a good engine and automatic gearbox. After buying it, i gave the car a complete service, dismantled and overhauled the entire brake system (although it had an MOT, lots of things were wrong), replaced all water hoses, overhauled the carburetors, fitted relays to the H4 lights, fitted a new coil and electronic ignition and new leads, overhauled the window wiper system, dismantled, checked and cleaned the front wheel bearings, fitted a modern alternator and overhauled the starter motor and gave it a full Waxoil treatment. I also fitted an LPG system
The car behaved and behaves very well and didn't break down and needed no emergency repairs.
In your situation, i would not buy a P6 as a daily driver with the budget you mention and having no experience with a P6 and no backup car. All P6 will be 40+ years old and most will not be driven frequently so will have hidden problems. Unless you do a complete check/repair like i did (which costed over GBP 1000,- on parts, i did all the work myself) , you will face breakdowns and high bills. I have a second P5B which i am restoring and therefore have a shed full of spare parts. If your car breaks down you will have to source parts and this normally takes at least 1 or 2 days which leaves you without transport and stressfull days. I would not consider using a P5B as every day car if i didn't have a fully restored and reliable MGB V8 and restored classic motorbikes as backup and the shed of spare parts.

I have owned more P5's and know where to look if the body is oke. Last week, I had a P5 from a former colleague (who recently bought it) with the intention to prepare it for an MOT after a lay up. After inspection, i found many rubbish repairs to the body and advised the man to sell it again which he will do. It would have been an endless money pit. You are likely to experience a simular situation like Quagmire if you don't use someone like Quagmires (who knows where to look now) to assist you with buying a P6. He has a very nice looking P6 which was full of nasty surprises. Luckily he had the will and capability's to repair it in a very good way and... he has a back up car.
So my advice is to buy a modern car and buy a classic later otherwise it is likely to end up as a disaster.

Forumer's cars come up for sale regularly. There'll often be a photographic record of the work somewhere here, an honest discussion on what is or is not good and you can see the competence of any repairs yourself. Most people here will exceed the quality by a long way of MOTs repairs and some will match or exceed professional repair work simply because the time is their own, not a commercial enterprise. Sheet steel is cheap!

Do not do what I did. I bought mine blind on ebay. It was lucky. I bought it on the basis the Rostyles and chromework would recover the value if it was beyond help.
