Oil Pump Removal and Upgrade Kit

Gerald,

Good to see it all works well! Decent oil pressure is important as it avoids other engine components will wear faster.
Your enginecompartment looks nice

Hello Peter
Thanks . I agree with the improved oil flow - it gives peace of mind when the old prince of darkness gauges are reading all over the place .
I love nothing better when Im feeling a little bogged down with life , to lift the bonnet and give the shiny bits a little rub up . Otherwise its vacuuming the house for Mrs Miller . Works the same .
I blew a power steer hose a few years back . What a mess it makes under there , esp as the oil hit the proverbial fan . Ive redirected the primary p/s hose around the front of the radiator to avoid that scenario again . Some nummer grease monkey had it going along the chassis cross member and it wore a hole or picked up a sharp object - BLAMM all over the motor .You should have seen the smoke when the oil hit the manifolds . I thought armageddon was all on .
Good rust protection though .
Gerald

Hi Gerald,

I am pleased that you are happy with the result.

Actually, the Prince had no hand in the gauges or any of the senders, they were all down to British Jaeger and Smiths originally.

Is your oil pressure gauge still giving spurious readings or is it one or more of the others?

Ron.

Hello Ron
Yes I was being a bit general there calling all gauges " the prince of darkness ''
I don't know long term gauge readings yet - I'm knee deep in catching up with orders for timber from my trees .
I tend to get passoinately into a job and forget everything else . Drives Mrs Miller nuts . " you're too focussed - can't you multitask yet " ?
I only do a job until I'm tired or stuck - in that case I go home and have a lie down or in most cases , hop on the "Forum "

I had a chance to play with my car today .
My oil pressure is sitting too high at around 55-60lb at 2500rpm ..
Ive put in another oil pump gasket and the pressure is the same .
My thoughts have gone to the relief valve in the oil pump body .I didnt replace that bit other than put in a new spring . Could that valve be sticking shut or have I got another problem I can't see ?
Ive checked the pressure off with a capillary gauge and it is reading high so its not the car gauges .
Gerald

Hi Gerald .
First thing i was going to say was remove the possible random reading of the electric gauge and take a positive reading with a capillary gauge . As you've done that ensure you have a standard relief spring in the pump ( i would substitute whatever's in there for the original one you took out , then you'll know for sure what you have ) Last thing is , ensure you are taking these readings when the engine is well up to temp , as in the stat has opened properly , remember you have new oil that hasn't been beaten about much yet ! :D
Ps if your readings don't clime much more after 2500 rpm , ie don't keep climbing with with corresponding revs then the relief valve is doing it's job and all is well :?: :D

Thanks Stina , I'll give that a go with the standard spring .
Should have done that first up .
Are oil pump relief valves known to stick ?

Hi Gerald,

According to one of my workshop manuals, the normal oil pressure for the original P6B oil pump is 30 to 40 psi at 2400 rpm and 55 psi at 4000rpm.

Ron.

I just returned some gear to Mal Clarke at Bygone Auto and he is of the opinion that 55-60lb at 2000rpm is good and leave it alone . He has 70lb on his racer and wouldn't be concerned at my pressure .
I'll give her a longer run and see what happens once that new oil gets hot and settles.

When ever we take apart an important lump of engine we are all a bit jittery until it's run for a while . You have increased the pressure with the more efficient larger capacity pump so to a certain extent the numbers in the W/M wont apply . The Higher pressure is controlled by the tension of the relief valve spring , Hence the recommendation for a standard one in the kit instructions . Just don't rev it overly hard until it's warmed through a bit . No problems . :D

Hearing you say that is like a sedative for me - quite relaxing .
Yes I am a bit jittery having taken the front off the engine and then put it back with new bits .
Im not from a mechanical background other than the odd agricultural fix-up on the farm , where things have a limited life at the best of times .
I haven't put the standard spring back in yet .
Im pleased my dash gauges are all showing true after using the capillary gauge as a default .

That's how mine behaves when the oil is cold. It settles to about 35psi when hot. Put your spanners away!

hey all!!

new member here i've just bought a 71" 3500 P6 Loving it!!!

just hoping someone can tell me the dimensions for the neoprene oil seal as i've got a leaky timing cover and this will be my weekend job

Got mine from a local land rover agent here . They are a stock standard item for early rover V8's
