Possible new Project: has some roof damage. Tought repair?

Hey everyone -

I'm a new forum member in the USA and I've been offered a couple of P6 2000TC projects. One has a spun motor bearing and I'm asking a question about that in the engine forum. The other one though has had some damage to the roof/windscreen frame from a fallen tree (yes really). If anyone could advise me on how bad a repair this would be I'd be very gratfeul. :D

I'm going to try and attach a picture. Basically it was hit by a small tree in the middle of the windscreen frame. I haven't seen the car yet, but I have a bunch of photos. I think I can get a spare roof panel and a spare windshield from the owner, so that’s not an issue: without the spare roof there’s no way I’d do a deal. The problem then is: how difficult might it be to straighten out the windscreen frame? I could send it to a body shop I guess, but I like to do all my own work if possible. It doesn’t LOOK like the frame is very badly squished but it’s tough to tell from a photo…….

Any advice would be appreciated: I’m pretty wary of this repair as I know how accurate the frame has to be for the windscreen to fit.

Oh, and the photo I uploaded seems to have come out HUGE so you may need to scrool down the pic to see the damage in the middle.......

Thanks!!

Looking at the 2 possible projects here, it does look to me like you have one that is mechanically challenged and one that is bodily challenged. Has it occurred to you to buy both and make one good one from the two? Obviously I dont know what these projects would cost so that may be a silly question :)

Hi Rich -

Wise words indeed, many thanks. Yes, the owner is trying to persuade me to take both cars.....but unfortunately I only have space for one! That's why I could probably take the parts I wanted from whichever car I didn't buy. Right now I'm inclining toward the motor-damaged car as I suspect it was slightly the better car before it came off the road.

Ah, apparently the pic didn't upoload properly.....TRY THIS!!

Just looking at the pic, I'd say that once the roof, screen, screen rubber and trim are out of the way, the actual header rail on the base unit won't have moved far, if at all. It will have gone down far enough under the impact to dent the roof and crack the screen, but most, if not all of that will have sprung back, and pushing it back a bit wouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't be too frightened by that one.

Of course, presented with the opportunity to save TWO Rover P6s, you are morally obliged to do so.

Can't argue with that. Once you are bitten by the Rover bug you do find they start to multiply.
But I would say that your potentials are on a pretty even par as far as the obvious issues you've mentioned, so what about the rest of the car's condition? The one in the picture looks to have a pretty rough interior. How is the engine in it? You may find yourself looking at a rebuild in that one too. How about the bodywork? Sunburnt but no rust? Tasty options? The one with the roof looks to have Sundym glass which is nice to have. The two in the background have the nice 'woodrim' steering wheels. Do any of them have AC? Could be useful in your climate. Fancy wheels? Headrests? Touring kits? SC or TC?
All these little bits add up to a more desirable car and can be quite expensive to source by themselves so if you can get your hands on a 'loaded' car to start with you'll be ahead of the game.

Certainly the roof repair car looks like a very easy repair except for the cost of a rear screen, if you can panel beat the roof and window structure so much the cheaper. As Warren says you need to restore both :D

I feel the obligation, believe me!! It's like trying to decide which puppy to take home!! :(

KiwiRover, you make a good point about the condition of the cars. I'm unsure right now about how good they are comparatively. I know that the motor-damaged car was a very nice example a few years back, though I think the roof-damaged car has been in use more recently. I believe both to be essentially rust-free. Both are 2000TC cars with stick shift and A/C. From the pics I was sent it looks like the motor-damaged car is marginally nicer overall, but pics can lie :D

The roof damage scares me more instinctively because I'm more confident making mechanical repairs and I'd rather not pay a body shop. However the overall condition could swing it, especially if the damage on the roof seems light.
