Speakers, and where to put them

Mine's got the speakers under the front seats. Steals a bit of foot space for people in the back but not enough to worry about. Doesn't sound too bad either, and they're pretty much invisible.

In my last P6 they were in the front doors, didn't look too bad as they were behind black grilles with chrome rings and made to look as 'factory' as possible. I think the grilles (and possibly the speakers) may have been from a Jag XJ-S so they didn't look too out of place.

This thread still alive?

I also have mounted some (of many in the system) front speakers under the drivers and passanger seats, the key word here is under the seats ie bolted to the seat frame not the floor. This approach means you do not loose any rear foot room and it also transfers the base frequencies to the seat itself which is a huge advantage for sub frequencies and save on many watts of other wise needed audio power. I can feel some photos may be needed of my set up, maybe later on in the week.

Here we go, this is the front pocket still plenty of room in the pocket, in fact you cant even see the speakers unless you get down to that level with your eye's

Having posted those pics and thought about it a bit, they dont look much and they dont look special and they dont look like bling, and that really was the whole point of doing this instal in this way, it's not invasive and you probably would not give it a second glance or any thought at all However the sound is superb.

I work a lot in the car audio industry and have done so for for over20 years working with high end installs costing upto NZ$70,000 with full custom work for doors boot spaces dashes etc but with a P6 its not the bling that is the point its the understatement

Hi Ron

Out of interest, how did you fit the speakers to seat frame?

Russ

Hi Russ,

That was actually Graeme that fitted them to the frames

Indeed I did fit them to the seat frame but such a long time ago that I can't remember the specifics of the install however I do recall drilling and taping going on.
The underseat fitment is good but it only forms part of the speaker system and its function is to provide bass and a small amount of mid range fill and it needs to be done in conjunction with tweeters and more mid fill as I did per the photos.
The final audio sound affect on mine is ok but I should have refined it more for better sound.
My original intention was to provide low visual impact on the P6 interior and to NOT cut into any door cards and panelling, in this regard I feel I had 100% success and all at minimal to no cost.
There are other things I still needed to do such as analysing the affect of rephasing the various speakers that are in the system for best sound and adding in some separate amps to power each speaker bank and feeding their inputs via an active mixer ( I have seen some cheap kit units available via jaycar), currently it just uses the headunit internal amp which is far from ideal.
One of these days I might revisit it, I have a very clear vision of what I need to do to get the most out of the set up but as it stands it is still much better than the more usual car installations you see in older after market fitments.
