Steering box rebuild/replacement help

Hi All, Hope everyone had a good Christmas!

I have just taken a look at my steering box on my LHD NADA 2000TC. I thought I could get away with just replacing the seals as I have a nasty leak. However when I jacked up the front of the car and checked the output spindle I noticed that I had some play there. So my questions are these:

[1] Has anyone had a go at replacing the bottom bushing? I have access to a full machine shop and I'm not a bad machinist.
[2] the dismantling and so on would I have to source new shims to rebuild the box too?
[3] Does anyone know of a good place to mine rebuilt or may have a replacment unit?

Best Christmas present for me this year was a whole two days to tinker on the Rover without being asked to put up shelves!

Thanks in advance,

Steven

You may find an even simpler solution! Ian at Rover-Classics had some new lhd power steering boxes a while back - chances are he still has some, alternatively you may find Steve "allrovers" on Ebay UK has some. Check by e mail with Ian and I'm sure he can contact Steve as well. (the conversion to power steering is simple and worthwhile)

While you're at it you may well find the idler box has seen better days as well. These are available exchange from Ian. If you would like to avoid the shipping costs of large hunks of cast iron then I'm sure Ian can give you a number to talk through the engineering issues involved.

Hi Chris,

Thanks! I'll try emailing Ian. I must admit, I'd rather keep the non PAS system as I don't mind the feel of it. I'll see what Ian has to say.

Cheers,

Steven
