I contacted them and specifically indicated I had a V8 and they said that they certainly had the appropriate box. When it arrived it was clearly a box for a 2000 not for a 3500. I rang them and they said that was all they had been selling for the past 16 years and no-one had a problem.
It was at the time but I'm well over it now though I've not ordered anything from them since. That is very disappointing.

Thanks for the information. I'm not even sure if the v8 one is worn yet. I just need time to check it out. The car has quite a pronounced low speed wobble on the steering wheel. I know the steering box is low on oil and I'm assuming that I've damaged it by driving it low on oil. I may be wrong though, it could be a wheel out of balance as the wobble seems to coincide with a full road wheel rotation if that makes sense. Having said that, it disappears above 30 or so mph.
Tyres too, I've had belts shift internally on tyres giving exactly those symptomsI would have your front wheels checked and balanced before looking further. I doubt very much that the vibration is being caused by the steering box.

The tyres are rather old. Good tread but at least ten years old.
Good advise, makes sense. That is the likely cause right there! Would be highly advisable to buy new tyres, regardless of how much tread is left on those.
