Steering wheel - another idiots guide please!

Would one of these work on the p6?

Looking at that one, I doubt it, and why would you need one anyway?*

*Said purely from the perspective of someone who's yet to fail to remove a P6 one (and others) by hand, and has won a considerable amount of cash from other people who've said it wasn't possible.... The limiting factor is the strength of the wheel itself, hence the need for pullers.

So all I need to do is drive to Essex and make a rash bet that you can't remove it and I'll be sorted :)

When should I expect you? A little extra spending money would be most welcome...

:) you know i'll never get around to it. Would love to bring my car to see you some time though. You'll probably tell me 20 things that are wrong with it that i didnt know though!

just a thought....

You might be able to remove the steering column ( top part ) with wheel on. Once removed you could then club it from behind with a mallet to release the wheel. I have done this before on a number of vauxhall's where there is a pinch bolt at the bottom. The P6 will be different but there might be a point where you can split the column.

Thanks, I have undone the top of column, but that wont move usefully until wheel is off! However as you say that might mean I can remove the column shrouds to gain better access to somthing solid to hit!

Thanks, will let you know.

Run the nut on until it's flush with the top of the thread, get your legs behind the wheel as described earlier
and lay into it with a club hammer.
Make sure the nut stays flush with the top of the column or you will peen over the top of the column if it runs
on further or smash the nut over the threads and maul them if it runs off a little bit. The last bit from bitter
experience.....

Done everything as advised, even bought a steering wheel puller - wheel wont budge and puller has damaged spokes, and I think I have a broken finger!

Last resort is to strip all column covers down to hit the boss from underneath as straight as I can - however will more force damage the steering column itself?

The entire column is quite easy to remove, just four bolts & the clamp bolt for the steering UJ. And the wires for the stalks of course. I'd do that before trying to just take the covers off and getting at the back of the wheel, you're going to find there isn't enough room to get a drift in the back.

Re: Steering wheel - Yippee!

Tried heat, no luck..........then tried puller again with bolts that widened the holes in the wheel a a bit - added a couple of nuts onto the bottom and hey presto, wheel off and new one on. Yippee!

One slight issue now is that the lock barrel etc has come loose and drops out of sight, how do I tighten/secure so it stays in the dash rather than presenting me with an empty hole?!?!?
