stereo - getting hot

hi i put a goodmans stereo into the p6 and works fine wiring already there however the back of the stereo unit gets quite hot / not too hot to touch but hotter than i would like , its earthed into the bulkhead behind the passenger drawer is this where the problem lies ????please help i like my johnny cash cd but the ring of fire i could do without :)

A couple of things, if you are running a common earth for the speakers, this can cause issues.
On some other cars I've owned, I've wired in small 12v computer fans to blow into the CD/ stereo. Just cable tie one to teh back of the box, with the fan blowing through the cooling holes, run one wire to earth, one to switched 12v.

Regards, Andrew.

My Panasonic runs hot and has done for the 6 years it's been in my P6 .I think it's just the heatsink for the internals

thanks for the replies i noticed the period radio wasnt working so i pulled it out to find the reason was it was connected to nothing and if it was never mind cos the speaker was missing too. so i had a nice goodmans cd unit and after a bit of searching bought a pair of sony speakers perfect for the front speaker and i intend to put the other under the parcel shelf. the wires were already done up for a memory type stereo so i hooked it all up and the sound was fantastic , however i didnt want to slide it in until i was happy everything was up to scratch and slowly but surely the back of the cd unit got quite hot i dont feel its earthed properly so im going to run a different earth from the unit // should i earth the speaker seperatly too??? at least the delay has given me time to realise the stereo should be hidden , it looks great but while the period radio is utterly useless it looks perfect.

Richard,
and how a lot of Rovers got built! I live within walking distance of Rover Way, where the (other) Rover factory was built (in a deprived area) to satisfy a the government at the time so that the new P6 production lines could be built in the existing Rover factories.
Regards, John.

How is this stereo wired up ? One speaker front and rear ? I assume you are using the left and right channels of the front speakers output ?
The speakers don't need an earth connection , just twin flex back to the stereo. If the stereo wasn't earthed it wouldn't work so that doesn't account for it running hot

i have speakers front and rear , brand new sony the previous owner either didnt like music or kept the speakers, my cd unit died today as i was fitting the rear speaker and sitting in the boot!!! i had ignition off it just died !!!im starting to suspect surges in the wire previous owner had offered up to connect to memory i havent followed it back how trusting of me!! not that i know what im talking about!! i now have the original old radio wired up to the ignition live and earthed by way of aerial and front speaker only its working away merrily but lw/mw i have one boring station all that work and not much to show for it, a tip for the novice like me (1) dont start messing with the wires without a crimper and fancy wire ends (2)dont try and stick your cd unit cage in the passenger glovebox with no more nails :O (3) dont use the steering wheel to keep lengths of masking tape the centre badge will fall off into your lap!!!

Personally I quite like the modern stereos in place in classics as it shows that the cars are not necessarily stuck in a time-warp but can move with the times. Not silly, light showy, ministry of sound type things though. Nice discreet units befitting our carriages.

i get what your saying rovering member i suppose youd get away with a certain amount of subtle modern touches in a p6 it seems to be caught in both times , i read your comment somewhere about the beauty of the green knobs and the general style of the dash and i couldnt agree more its a lovely place to be ,i think ill have another go at putting my cd unit in and do the job properly this time!! it is quite a subtle unit but ill probably still hide it i just want the sound , my cds and FM !!

I think it has been mentioned before in this list but for someone that wants to combine retro looks with modern performance in the car stereo department, Becker produces a model (Mexico retro) that looks just like an old Mexico but has FM radio, CD and Sat Nav!

I would love it but with a price of around 2000 pounds it is worth more than my car!

To separate a modern stereo receiver front and rear, instead of left and right, defeats the intent of stereo. inasmuch as we do not have one ear facing forward, and the other facing rearward.
I expect to add side speakers within the doors. There seems to be ample room within. I may also go with a remote amplifier and disc changer in the "boot".
My Rover seems to prefer classical music

I am not prepared to cut the door panels to fit speakers.
In my Austin i found space under the dash and fitted them in order to be invisible. They sound nice too!

I 've read somewhere on this forum that speakers could be fitted on the sides of the centre console, so i think that i will follow this route.

I am not sure about the rears though. Perhaps i will have to plug the central speaker hole and then cut others left and right? I think that i will have to cut into the metal too, and i am not too happy with it. So any alternative suggestions for the rear?

I've just got a set of pretty good door cards for our 2200 but the fronts are unmolested which puts me in the dilemma of whether to keep the front speakers where they are or put them in the centre console. That means having one speaker facing away from you be it driver or passenger. There are rear speakers fitted too so we'd still have the full sound spectrum from them. I know some of you have the speakers in the console. How do they sound?

You used to be able to get "wedge" shaped speakers that sat on top of the rear shelf - no cutting required. (But very visible!)

I had the speakers in the centre console, unfortunately it was in my convertible so the road / wind noise made it dificult to give a good description of the sound quality. Although when stationary they sounded pretty good, I used a pair of Pioneer speakers, can't remember the model no.

The only other problem is that you need to hack big holes in the sides of the console to fit, but I think decent centre consoles are easier to find than decent door cards !

Another trick I should mention, I did a fairly serious install in a Midget once, 600w amp welded to the underside of the dash on the passenger side (needed special alternator), 18" and 10" drivers and tweeters in a custom panel behind the seats etc..
As good as it was, it lost a certain amount of detail once moving with the roof down. So I installed 2 small tweaters in the dash, you wouldn't really notice them at first sight, but they worked a treat by "bringing the sound forward" without fitting anything in the doors.

I mention this because you may be able to fit the bass speakers under the dash/seats, and then fit tweaters higher up facing the occupants to give you the detail.

HI ALL.
As speakers were fitted in the door panels,by the dealers as a standard option, for radiomobile stereo's,as that is where they are meant to go,I cannot see the problem with fitting them now ???
A concourse judge could not seperate 2 cars on door speakers alone!! wouldnt be fair!
I recently bought a Goodmans package, digital tuner display stereo cassette,2front door,2 rear sit on shelf wedge speakers, the radio did not suit the "look" so it went into the p/side cubby.
4 speaker Sound is GREAT!!! :p :p
see the photo link.

Drenched all doors in antirust 2yrs ago,I forgot to clean the rust stains off first, :( now I dont want to touch it!! its not got any worse since. a bit is showing on the outside, again no worse! ive got a near mint set of doors & wings prepped and ready for paint :p

If you want to hear in stereo, the console mounting won't do. The offside speaker will be lost to you. Maybe if you could get a speaker grill with the Rover logo on it, putting holes in the door cards wouldn't seem so bad
