i've just got a series 1 2000 sc and the clutch is stuck
the pedal seems ok and the engine starts etc and i'm told i can free it by towing it.
how would i go about this anyone please?
is it to chuck it in gear and just tow it/
any help vwery much appreciated please

Initially you can run the engine until it's hot, and then leave the car overnight with the clutch pedal wedged down to the floor and see if it frees of as it cools. Then try flicking the starter with it in gear with your foot off the clutch and the hand and foot brake on. If that doesn't do it, run the engine until it's hot, switch off, and then start it in gear with your foot on the clutch and drive it like that, going on and off the throttle until it frees.

We had this on our 2.2tc after several months layed up. No amount of dragging it up and down the road freed it off, and we snapped off the front towing eye in the process.

We eventually managed to roll it to a local garage who got a screwdriver/chissel in between the plate and cover and popped it off.

It's a very long time ago now, but that's how I remember it.

I've only ever had one that wont free off with the kangaroo drive and that was on an E Type Jag much to the owners disappointment :)

I had it once on a V8, many years ago when traffic was lighter.

I drove it on the road, not the easiest thing to do with no clutch, with the clutch pedal pushed in for about 30 miles before it finally let go with a huge bang.

It was fine after that for many years

Hi, it works best in top gear because that is when it has most load. (Clutch always slips
in top first when knackered, remember)

cheers chaps for that
i've tried dragging it up the drive to no avail and now the starter has had enough!
grrrr
i'll keep trying !
i even thought of having a laying on of hands whilst singing hymns and stuff as that would get me started and gone very quickly!

I thought that loop on the front was to hold the car down while being transported e.g. on a ferry, not for towing

I'd say you think right, but I can't say I've never used it for towing either, it's just too easy.

Well there's no other front towing point :D Not that they necessarily needed to provide one in those days.

Every P6 I have ever owned has had them, although both of the rear ones on Sparky were broken so knowing how important they were, I cut them off :)

i've been told to try starting the car and 'tapping' the gears with the gearstick trying reverse and 4th??
whats the chances anyone?
i'm not a betting man but heigh-ho|!

Don't try anything in reverse - the gear box isn't strong enough
Starting it in 4th with the clutch down should do the trick

Chances of getting it in gear while it's running without a clutch are low to say the least, and it's going to sound shocking. As Dave says, put it in 4th with the clutch pedal down, then try to start it.

I normally warm the engine to normal temp then turn off and restart in 1st with the clutch depressed, handbrake off and if the initial kangaroo doesn't sort it, get up some speed and snap on and off the throttle. If you're familiar with clutchless changes then work your way through to 4th if you prefer

I have been successful in freeing off clutches using the following method:
Chock both front wheels.
Raise one rear wheel clear of the ground,
Start the car in 4th gear
blip the throttle on and off with the clutch held down.
Usually after a few blips the clutch lets go.
Done it with a Marina, P6, Triumph Spitfire, Ford Transit and a Bristol Coach!

ok guys!
too late to try anything tonight but i'll annoy the neighbours tomorrow night then!
fingers crossed for a bit of success
i'll keep any progress posted

well the engine ruyns ok now so if i'm back in time from work tomorrow i'll give freeing the clutch a go.
i freed the webasto roof off so any burning clutch smells can dissapear rapidly, thats what they're for isn't it?
