If you're running an 88 degree stat Rich, then it will sit somewhat higher on the gauge, but with the correct sender it will allow it to register where it should do.
mine reads as top of the green encroaching on red and the IR thermometer says 88 degrees at the temp sender and has done since i had the car and fitted a thermostat...
yup - i've just done ordered a genuine lr one. If so I'll make a sticky of this or of a new post so the p6 world can know then genuine article fixes it!
