Here's the latest arrival. Standing on her own wheels for the first time in 20 years, this is our 1978 registered ex-Met Police (Regional Crime Squad) car.

She's been dormant for a very long time, but is in fundamentally good order and should be a really enjoyable project. More to follow in due course. :)

Will follow your new project with interest Nick. Is it your intention to keep it in its existing colour?

Ron.

Great colour and I loves the history. Looking forward to seeing this one getting back on the road :D

She's always been Avecado, so yes. This was a 'plain clothes' car - she was built police spec (strengthened front shock absorber mounts etc) and had all the radios/bell/sirens etc. but was not 'marked up'.

Very nice Nick! And it looks really solid from what I can see. Did it come with the corners too? How much of the police bits are still there? Love the colour. :D

The wings are off the car. She's been up on stands for the last 20 years as a little welding was done at the rear. She was never put back together again. The base unit has been stripped back to the paint and needs treating/rustproofing. There isn't any obvious welding to do, remarkably for a car built when it was.

She's a December 1976 build car, and apparently was the last one registered by the Met. I'll be doing more work to find out more.

I see that the service card mentions an oil change required at 6000 miles........
Is that mileage for real or is it "once around the clock"?

Nice buy, good luck with the project!!

What a brilliant project! From the one shot it looks pretty sound, too! Given her history I think it only right to call her The Mole, as in Guacamole...

Very interesting :) . I assume that the police radio and other accessories were removed? If so, wonder what the chance would of getting some period replacements?

"Q" car.

I have the full service records for the car. The previous owner used to work on Police P6's and is full of interesting information. I'm pretty sure he said to me they did them every 3k.

Mileage is 205k. It doesn't look it though, she's been superbly looked after prior to layup.

Yes. I'm not sure if she originally had covert blue lights - will get more info.

Actually very good. The stuff is about. I'm not sure if we'll go too far down that route though - it has a brilliant early 1980's radio cassette in at the moment which adds to the general funkiness of the car. The rear decker has been changed, there was an aerial for the mainscheme radio opposite side to the fuel tank filler.

Looking at the service record it appears the Met did 6k mile oil changes on the cars.

It appears she had far more sets of front brake pads than she did oil changes whilst in service - every 3-4000 miles. If this car could talk it could tell some very interesting stories - the inner wings have bumps where the top ball joint has collided with them under 'spirited' driving!

The Met also changed brake fluid extremely regularily, it seems at least every 10k miles. I'll put the history together for an article shortly.

Cheers
Nick
