Timing Kit Recommendation

Does anyone have a recommendation for a timing set (chain and gears) for the 3.5 L V8? I have read that the ones from Win's , Wadham's, etc, are not very sturdy. Don't know if this is true or not, but, would appreciate any advice before I purchase.

Timing gear? YOu have a choice between the factory one which has a nylon gear and I'd go to a Rover engine specialist and get an all metal Cloyes set.

The all metal set will last longer but give you slightly more noise. And by longer the Rove type can get sloppy at 50k miles.

TBH it's fairly easy and cheap to change anyway.

Cloyes no longer makes a set for the Rover V-8. They have quit making kit 9-3132 (which had a Rover application) and have replaced it with kit 9-1132 (which no longer has an application for this engine). I called Cloyes' technical support. They were unable to provide me with a kit that would work for the 3500 3.5 l.

Yes I have that exact kit and am very happy with it. I believe they are the same for all variants of the engine including the iron block 300/340/350 and V6 whether they list it or not. I mean even the timing cover of some of these engines fits the Rover engine.

You have the Cloyes 9-1132 or the original 9-3132? If you have the 9-1132 that's what I will order. Cloyes couldn't tell me whether they just dropped the application for Rover engines when they switched to this kit, or, if the kit was significantly different from the 9-3132 and would not fit the Rover 3.5
Thanks for your help.

I got a kit from Real Steel last year which l believe is a Cloyes. Not fitted yet but should be very soon.
I'll check that out. Thank you.

I got a set from V8 Developments, along with the head work they did and a cam. It did seem to be of a high quality if a little tight to fit. It was made by JP performance in Australia.

Curious. I just bought (arrived yesterday) a Cloyes set, marked as "Rover v8 std timing set", numbered 3003K. Its all metal, but its not a roller set, based on the teeth its a Morse chain. A$66 + postage.
The 9-1132 roller set with 3 keyways is listed on Amazon.com.au at A$117.

Thay may be the way for me to go. Is there an important difference between a regular and roller set? I’m not a mechanic.?

When I built my 4.6 for the blue car I acquired an engine that had previously been rebuilt by Turner engineering. Aware of their reputation I called them and quoted their stamping number and they kindly gave me the build information from their records.
The engine had been used since and had been fitted with a JP Performance timing chain set when offered for sale. This new chain was alarmingly slack, so I wanted to know if Turner had line bored the crank at all, they had not.
I junked the new JP set and following Turner advice that they fit a stock chain to all their engines as standard did indeed fit the same bought from them.

My std looks like a Morse type chain, based on the teeth profile, no rollers. The roller type has teeth that look bicycle gears, and the Cloyes roller types come with 3 keyways on the crank gear, so you can adjust out some stretching later. Considering I wont be doing lots of miles in mine the std set should see me out.

The standard set can be had for £20-30 so yes and in a well maintained car 50k miles (at least) is a lot of years for a classic. Back when I did mine the Cloyes was only a few pounds extra. Actually dollars as a friend brought it back from the US. If it's noisier than the standard nylon gear , I can't hear it. The main noise at the front by far is having a fixed fan. I swapped mine for electric and now the main noise is the whirring of the alternator. I fact once you remove the fan in a car with good top end condition it's quieter than most modern car's. certainly my newish Mercedes 4 pot which sounds unpleasant if not loud.
