Vitesse wheel nuts

I have bought some Rover Vitesse wheels to fit my P6 and am looking for suitable wheel nuts.
Presuming that the Vitesse still had 7/16" UNF thread then standard vitesse wheel nuts should do.

Ideally I want 20 in stainless steel but I know that will be impossible, so I need either 20 to get me going or just one as a pattern so I can make them myself out of stainless steel.

Failing either of those has anyone got one they can measure the external dimensions from, hex width, length of hex section, shank diameter and shank length.

Incidentally, if anyone is looking for special wheelnuts I found this site extremely useful when sourcing nuts for some Minilite replicas to fit

http://www.graystonengineering.com/wheelnutspage.htm

Grayston don't supply direct to the public but were more than helpful with advice and I then ordered what they specified through Larkspeed.

Many thanks in adavance!!

Probably best to get me on robin.haslam555@virgin.net

SD1's have metric studs, so you either need to change the P6 studs to SD1 ones and use the SD1 nuts, or buy nuts of the same type as an SD1, but with UNF threads.

i did have sd1 wheels on mine and i had to change the studs as well on mine some times i wish i kept the wheels

Many thanks! :D

I have also been told that the wheels (pictured below) are not Vitesse wheels but standard SD1 alloys. I mocked them on my P6 with some old 7/16" UNF sleeve nuts and an assorted jumble of washers and they fit well with no clearance problems, so I would like to take the trouble to sort some nuts out whilst keeping my std P6 nuts. (Besides which I thought they looked great!! )

So in that case can anyone sell me a standard SD1 nut that fits the wheels (although not the correct thread for my P6) or can someone give me accurate measurements of the shank diameter and length so I can either source some or make some.

Many thanks,

Robin.

Some centre caps would be nice too..........

I thought early SD1 wheel studs/nuts were 7/16??
They could be the same sleeved nuts as used on alloy wheels on the TR7's!

hi robin i almost think i got a complete set of the centre caps in my garage that i am looking for a few quidd i will look 2moz i did have those wheels on mine when my dad owned it and sold the wheels but kept the cabs

You should find that Rimmers can help you out with nuts for these. They are actually series 1 SD1 3500S rims. If their price makes you cough then you could always buy one and then see if you can get an equivalent cheaper!

I had a lot of fun fitting my Vitesse wheels

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5438&start=0

There was a little more to it than first meets the eye.

I did buy a complete set of Stainless wheel nuts from a bloke down south but the thread was a little loose so I sent them back.

The best way is to fit the SD1 studs and SD1 studs. Not good to do anything else with such an important thing as wheel fitting.

Just to reiterate a point (which I am STILL to fit on mine) is that if you've access to a pair of front grease hub caps from an SD1 they should both fit AND allow SD1 rim fitment with no issue, as the P6 ones are significantly bigger. Don't know if yours are as tight in the centre as Vitesse rims, but that'd be likely I thought...

Thanks Tor - you have saved me a lot of time and trouble.

I had tried the wheelson the rear of my P6 because thats where I anticipated problems with tyre clearance - until I saw your message I had not tried them on the front hub. Fortunately thanks to you I tried them before I started buying wheel nuts in bulk or having them made up, because they DO NOT FIT.
The centre hole is too small to clear even with the grease cap removed - it wont settle on to the faceplate of the hub without having some extra metal machined out of the rear of the wheel centre.

They are back on e-bay as I cannot be bothered with so much work!!

Thanks again,

Robin :?

:?: Very odd mine fitted to the front hubs with no problems, I had them off last weekend looking at my clunking break pads and by chance was looking at the centre hub clearance, the thoughts running thru my mind were "that looks a bit close" but on closer inspection the SD1 rims seem to have a small groove cut into the rim hub area and when I looked at my 1974 october built s2 p6b hubseems to match exactly to the small shoulder at the centre of the hub. My SD1 rims were previously on an SD1 and have not been specially machined to fit my p6b, maybe there are either different SD1 rims or different p6b hubs??? or I was just born under a lucky star  I used the standard UNF mag nuts on my P6B.

Hmm... mine didn't. The rim on the grease cap was just a little too thick for the indent in the wheel, and the wheel didn't fit snugly onto the hub.

I modified it with a hacksaw 8) and it fits just fine now.

That usually means that you have an early set of front hubs - Girling up to 1969. We had to machine mine down in order for them to fit. You won't have that problem if you pick up a set of hubs from a series 2 P6.

Thanks Chris, not sure I want them to sell on ebay now or not!

At least if they don't go I can then make use of them!!!

Many thanks, :D
