Many thanks again to colnerov who tipped off the forum about this car!

Well...Rebekah made it back to Leicester on June 25th and I've made a start on what will be a (very?) long project!

First registered 07/07/1966 and has Dunlop brakes...which look like this after years in storage. Obviously the calipers make good homes for spiders!

Bit better now...

In fact, it looks like she was driven across a ploughed field before being locked away.

I seem to remember a thread on here some time ago about strengthening plates on the top link...

So...more anon!

PS - engine's got to come out very soon and my mate's hoist and frame is in use up in Glossop - anyone near-ish to Leicester with a hoist they're willing to loan/rent for a day? :)

Cheers,

Hello Stan,

Gee you will have to have a lot of patience. Mind you at the end of the day at some point in a few years time maybe, Rebekah will be a stunning car and something for you to be extremely proud of.

Just an observation,..what is that thin strut that runs from the top link outer pivot towards the bukhead?

Ron.

HSS over the road from you do a weekend rate - think it was about £40... (Annoying to pay so much if you can avoid it though!)

Good to see another Dunlop braked 2000 on the go. My 1964 2000 "Jezzabel" is still on the Dunlops, and they always worked fine. Unfortunately the old girl is in storage at my parents farm in NSW some 5000km from Darwin so I dont get to visit her that often. Currently she is in a shed under 6 inches of dust awaiting the day that I will again pull her out of the shed and get her back on the road.
Jez was my first car and a gift from my dad for my 16th birthday. She was on a trailer with the engine in a box, no front wings and no interior. it took me 10 months and ALL the money I had to get her on the road. I drove her every day for 8 years as my only car, before a catastrophic engine failure (the 2000 engine is NOT designed to rev past 7000rpm reliably  ) saw her laid up, and there she has stayed for the past 13 years. I feel guilty every time I visit and she is on the list to be restored next when I move south (my wife's TR3 will have to wait its turn  )

The pistons are the same as used on the Jag MKII and Aston Martin DB4/5, and are still readily available, they are suprisingly cheap but the caliper bracket can be bent if you (like me) are a bit ham fisted when handling them. I look forward to watching your progress due to my soft spot for these early cars.

Photos of Jez prior to moving into the shed.

Cheers

Hi there Guy,

7000 rpm eh? :!:

Thought I'd have a look at the front calipers whilst I'm waiting on a chain block loan to lift the engine. After much use of the blowlamp and molegrips (some previous owner obviously didn't possess anything 3/8" A/F  ) on the already-butchered and seized set screws the cylinders/pistons are off. Then the challenge of getting them apart. WM says use an airline...yeah, right!

Both the nearsides (LH) look like this:

The offsides:

One out of four might be OK with a bit of judicious polishing, but even that's debatable.

Powertrack can supply new genuine Dunlop cylinder/piston assemblies at...£89.50 each + VAT + P&P. Past Parts can re-sleeve the cylinders at £75 each. Don't need them anything like yet...so I can save up!

If anyone has any for sale, or comes across any in the next year or three - give me a shout eh?

Cheers,

Yep, 7000 rpm after shifting from 4th to 2nd at 94mph at a track day at Eastern creek (forgot I only had 4 gears and tried to shift to 5th then back and cocked it up  ). This resulted in all 4 conrods folded in half and all the cam gear disintergarting. A real mess but she will be rebuilt as a fast rod car, with a pair of twin choke webers on a custom manifold, with a stronger gearbox (see my trials and tribulations in getting a Rover 4 speed gearbox to withstand a 250hp V8). Still a year or two off but I have started hunting parts down now.

Cheers

Call me a pervert but do you have any pics of that engine blow up!

PS I'll show some I have the results of a spectacular Ariel Sq4 engine blow up.

Past parts do a good job though I found that the prices jump a bit.

Did the jaguar have the same dunlop brakes? might be another source.

As far as I know Colin, early E Types had the same calipers - I'm watching a pair on ebay now. Also, there's a pair of Lancia ones that look promising and I've asked the seller for some more info.

Finally got around to getting the engine out with the assistance of a 1/2 ton chain block borrowed from work for the weekend.

Prep...

Which is all well and good but what to hang it from? So...having got things neatly tidied away onto pallet racking in the new garage it all had to come out!
Having cut one side frame down to fit in the garage there wasn't quite enough height, so a bit of improvising needed...

Not the straightest of lifts, but good enough...
100_1628.jpg

100_1633.jpg

Made up an OK stand with 4 pallets and a bit of a top screwed together...
100_1644.jpg

And ready to move...
100_1649.jpg

...to its new (temporary  ) home...

Plenty to go at here!

Have you got your own pallet truck ?
That beam looked dangerously close to the car roof

Pallet truck was another "borrow from work" job. Fits snugly in the 600's boot with the handle off and the seats down!

Which beam Dave? I think you may have been looking at the beam to the front of the rig...this gives you a better view...
100_1624.jpg

Is there no end to the uses for that pallet racking, I made the frame for my garden decking out of a load, could park a car on it !

Time for an update!

First job...clearing the engine bay...and soon found the bulkhead insulation had disintegrated.

Gearbox was coming out next...but decided to start at the back end and work forward...

Brake fluid leak at some time by the look of it...

Rebekah with her bum up...ready to divulge a few more secrets!

One crumbly bush...

Final drive out...
100_1811.jpg

...and as I feared, calipers and pads are not a pretty sight!
100_1816.jpg

100_1818.jpg

Couldn't get a good purchase on one of the caliper mounting set bolts, so had to pop the differential drive shaft out to get at it...

Bit of wear on the splines...only to be expected I guess after 44 years!

Diff carrier to come out tomorrow...and the gearbox at last! :)
