1st car

Hi,

First car (you'd think I'd look happier!!!), 1980 Mini Clubman, it was quite young when I got it, bought as a bribe/present by my parents as, quite rightly, they were worried that I’d die if I kept riding Motorbikes on the road

Many Mini's followed as well as Imps, Dolly Sprints, 205's etc..... the list is long and varied

I learnt to drive in my Dad's 1972 2000TC and passed my driving test in it in around 1989. It still lives on and am planning to start working on getting it back on the road.

Rover2.jpg

The first car I bought was a 1980 Mini 1000 (still survives) followed by a 1980 1275GT (also still survives), then went on to a Mk2 Escort Mexico, Mk2 Golf GTI, then various Nissans and Volvos.

I learnt in a Datsun sunny, while learning mum took me out in her car which at first was a Austin A40 then a Moggy 1000, upon passing my test Dad let me use his 1955 Morris Oxford which after a year he let me keep. Wish I still had it. First car I bought was a 1.6 Capri , I was so cool, from that too an Austin Princess, that was a lovely drive. Had a p6 3500 for a few months, couldn't afford to run it so swapped it for a Sierra. From that a vauxhall Fronterra, Then Nissan X Trail, onto Saab Convertible and finally saw the light again and a P6 3500s. Didn't realise I had that many cars, now what about all the vans I have had, no not going their. Too many.

My instructor took part in the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon and used the samer car for lessons - a 1968 Corsair 2000E , red , back vynil roof , matt black bonnet and 51/2 " steel wheels and a Motolita steering wheel . I felt really cool driving that when I was 17

Learnt and passed my test in my mums ,"ex grandads" blue 1960 Morris 1000,514 RPD,then when I passed just before Xmas 1977,mum and dad put a bit more dosh to my Xmas money allowing me to buy my 1st car,a coffee and cream coloured 1960 2 door Morris 1000,280 EYD.
Thats why I was happy to be given the 1960 2 door,1 family owned,Morris 1000 to save,as a bit of nostalgia motoring!
Once recomissioned,I intend to give,,"lend", it to my nephew as his 1st car,he can then learn basic mechanics on it as well.
The next car was given to me by my dad in 1979 as the clutch/gearbox had gone, and he said if you can fix it you can have it,"it was just the clutch",,it was a lovely 10yr old S1 Rover 2000TC in blue,VHY 97H.

First car was a 1977 Mini 1000, but it had a Y reg on it.... in my 'careful' ownership it lasted just over four months and went to the local scrapper having given up the ghost one very frosty January morning. What I didn't realise until later was that some of the interior parts were worth a bob or two as they weren't quite standard. Apparently, soon after it was first reg'd it was taken over to Italy where the owner ditched most of the BL trim and fitted those from an Innocenti Mini, including a six dial dashboard and fancy vinyl seats, then brought it back to Blighty in 1983..... by the time I'd joined the National Mini Owners Club a few months later and I'd found out what they were it was too late, the car had been crushed!

my first car and the car that i passed my test in was a 1979 Austin allegro 1500 sport. That car was a great car and survived some punishment as i was 17 at the time. I loved the car and from time to time think about it. Happy days

First bike i rode was a Honda SS 50 cc , unusually a four stroke, first bike on road was a Suzuki AP 50 with fully functioning pedals a micron exhaust and a big bore kit. Noisy way to get to 60mph with frozen fingers in the winter :(

i learnt and passed my test in a mini but my 1st car was a 1969 estcort basic
one sun visor and rubber mats!
took me months to find the windscreenwasher button

First car was my p6 but that was when I was 12, couldn't insure it when I was 17 , so I learn
t to drive in a clubman estate which I've still got as well.

My first car was a 1983 VW Passat estate, 1.6GL. It was blue, lowered and covered with MTB company stickers, including this one on the bonnet 1m square.

I had it for about 18 months and then I bought a Volvo 740 estate which I had a for about 6 years.

Edit* just noticed this was my 1000th post!
well done that man :D .

The car I passed my licence in is also the first and only car that I have ever owned, my 1974 Rover.

Ron.

My first car was a 1972 Lincoln Continental Town Coupé powered by a whopping 7.6litre V8. It cost me 700 quid. I regret having sold it. One day I'll get another one. I can't find any photos of mine at the moment, but here's one from somewhere on the interwebs in the same paint colour.

Mine had a white vinyl roof and a knackered passenger side rear wing, basically the same 'stance' and 'attitude' as the one in the photo. It had headlights behind 'garage doors' operated by a foot switch. Two glasspack 'cherry bomb silencers', what a wicked noise. What a wicked car. Why did 'sensible' adults prevail on me to sell it? Who wants to be sensible anyway? Damn, I really wish I could go for a cruise in one of these beasties right now. I'm off to my garage to carry on panel-fitting my itsy bitsy little P6 V8. The Lincoln's engine was more than twice the capacity of my RV8!
I forgot, the licencse plates were in the style and size of US plates, and the plate holder/surrounds said "Holmes Tuttle - Beverly Hills Lincoln". How f#*king cool was that? Man, that big fat old sled totally rocked.

Mine was a yellow Ford Cortina Mk4 Estate aka the "Yellow Submarine". It was only 9 years old when I bought it off my old man but was already a bit of a shed as rust was appearing all over the place. I suppose it was quite a good car to learn the basics on in terms of servicing/repairs and all the parts were very cheap (and scrappies were teaming with bits). I traded it in only a few months later in early 1990. From the enquiry I just did, looks like someone maybe got a year or two out of it before she was scrapped (I assume) in 1992? After doing my lessons in 1000cc Mini Metros, 1600cc of Ford grunt seemed amazing at the time :D . Lucky I never killed myself! Only now do I truly understand why car insurance for young male drivers is so expensive!!

Date of Liability 28 01 1992
Date of First Registration 22 05 1980
Year of Manufacture 1980
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1593cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour YELLOW

Don't think I have any pic's of it but found a stock photo of one just like it:

Mine was a 1970 Buick Electra 225 four door. 18 feet and change long, 7 litre engine, 370 horsepower and 8 miles per US gallon!
I came home from college one day and had my dad tell me he sold my car for me. It wasn't that I wanted to sell my car but a business partner of his was looking for a vehicle to moose hunt with and didnt want to buy a truck. I had the opportunity to buy it back a couple of years ago but passed on it because of too much rot in the frame.

Hey Al,

One of my first cars was a 73 T Bird with a 460. Mine was pale yellow and had straight through cherry bombs on it - it would leave great big fat number 11s up my street when I floored it. I am guessing that we were both driving around different parts of North London in our 70s Detroit steel at about the same time. I am uncertain why sensible adults would advise against such a vehicle for a young man... This is a picture of one like mine as regretably I didn't take any pics.

One the same colour...

SoCal, that's is quite a nice looking car. Can't help but wonder if your dad's pal was planning to shoot the moose or just mow them down in the Electra :D .
