So a couple of weekends ago I was able to get access to the works facilities over a long weekend as the cars were at Ally Pally for a show. I decided to carry out the 5 speed conversion I had planned.
Unfortunately I did not have all the pieces of the jigsaw ready, The flywheel needed to go away to be faced and lightened and I did not have a friction plate.
I rushed the flywheel into Scholar Engines on Thursday afternoon with the hope of collecting it Saturday lunchtime and also ordered a friction plate on next day delivery.
I got the engine and slushbox pulled on the Friday and mounted the 5 speed to the motor and shoved it back in the hole to allow the fabricating of the new rear gearbox mount.
This I did on Saturday and collected the flywheel. On Sunday the engine and box were out again and the flywheel and clutch fitted and the new pedal box and clutch master cyl went in.
Then the lot was re installed and hooked up. The existing propshaft bolted right up and the gearstick came right out the existing auto shifter hole and just needs a rubber gaiter.
Of course this is the condensed version leaving out the adapting of the clutch pushrod to work in harmony with the 4 speed manual cylinders I had and the bleeding etc and the general jiggery pokery of getting bits to fit and work.
But the car does now drive
Out with the old
Gone
5 speed ready to go in
Today the old girl went off to get fitted with a new blue party frock.
I shall be nervously pacing up and down awaiting the outcome.
