hi anyone know of a good ball joint splitter im taking out my steering box to replace it with a secondhand one and have tried 2 different types but wont fit :-(

If you don't mind replacing the TRE and steering siderod rubber boots then any small taper type joint splitter will work.

mine wont fit over the rubber that would mean id have to try to hammer it on? I dont really want to change them. And i have tried hitting side on to jolt it but it dont want to go plus i cant really get in there :-/

Taper splitters have to be hammered in, that's the way they work.
You can get there to hammer them apart, but doing that always carries the risk of splitting the boots as well.

If the boots get split then its real easy to get them and replace them!
Give the joint area and in the boot a good dose of grease as well!
Finding the original Churchill tools made for Rover P6's, is harder than finding some rare parts!

Or you could make them yourself. Some thick steel, bolts, nuts, a welder and a picture of what the original looks like are all that's needed. You can work out dimensions from the car :)

i was thinking that cheers!

If you have a std gas blow lamp,"cartridge type",often a bit of gentle heat, will do enough to shift it when you hit it,be careful of the rubbers unless you replace them.

thanks everyone for the advice, so anyway out came the dye grinder and i made my puller fit perfect :) so i can now get on with it yay :)

its out and everything went smoothly :) just need to clean up before the new box is fitted, bloody filthy under where the box sat :-/

Hi Herts2000

Interested to see you say you are fitting a later type steering box in place of an early type. Have I got that right?

Reason I ask is that the later type steering boxes are generally thought to give much heavier steering than the early type. So I shall be very interested to hear what you find.

What was the problem with the original? It is very possible it is easily fixed as manual steering boxes have adjustment within and it's (relatively) easy to change seals.
