ball joint splitter?

Hi Herts2000

Interested to see you say you are fitting a later type steering box in place of an early type. Have I got that right?

Reason I ask is that the later type steering boxes are generally thought to give much heavier steering than the early type. So I shall be very interested to hear what you find.

What was the problem with the original? It is very possible it is easily fixed as manual steering boxes have adjustment within and it's (relatively) easy to change seals.

Chris
Hi chris yes thats right, the only reason im putting a late type in is at the time thats what i could get hold off (from nick dunning) so im going ahead with the conversion as mine was leaking and worn out due to not being topped up or just a heavy leak by the state of it around that area in the engine bay so im sure its going to feel a whole lot nicer to drive once done. I would rebuild the original but to be honest i hate having the car in bits for any length of time lol :) once done i will report back to this post on how it feels thanks! Dave.

little update haven't done that much due to freezing conditions but the box is back in :D i found it very easy and everything fitted nice,
I had to make up a stud to go in the body for the front of the box and i finally managed to find a 2.2 reservoir bracket from wins, so im praying for some okish afternoons to finish her off and for that test drive ive been waiting for. Pics to follow soon!
Dave.

Yes I use that technique all the time, there's actually less chance of damaging the balljoint rubber, threads etc, than with the scissor or wedge splitters (assuming you don't miss with the hammers :D ).

To make it a little easier I tend to use a lump hammer held against one side and then hit the other side, but two hammers works just as well.

I always try this method first before breaking out the scissor splitter.

well the other night i change one side (top ball joint boot) and used the same puller that i modified to fit the track rods and it works very well didnt slip off or damage anything and just went with a bang. done that side in 5mins :)

Well, next Saturday (Come rain, snow or tornado!) I have promised myself that I'll finally swap the front nearside leg on Lemmy as I have a spare one with a good bottom joint - as opposed to the one with half inch of play that I currently have on the car.

So, splitters? My two I have been modified for various Hillman joints where depth is the difficult bit and so have had a lot of the fork chopped off, time for new....... Anyone know what width would fit best ? Especially on the bottom where the bottom link one seems quite close?

Although I might treat myself to a couple of new hammers :D But that looks doubtful as the suspension has that dry, rust look of something that hasn't moved for a very long time

Hi, well having recently measured my spare joints for some one on another thread.
I can say that the pin on the top and bottom joints are 3/4 or 19mm at their biggest.

Hope this helps!!

Colin

well to do the side rod it needs to be rougthly30mm wide to slip over between the rubber gaitor and the arm on the top of the swivel pillar and height needs to be around 50mm. And i done my top ball joint with the same puller that i had to modify to fit.

to be honest the wing aint in the way.
Taking the suspension apart is very easy dont let the look of it put you off :D
My ball joint puller will most likely do the bottom one too. Ill try and put a picture of it up tomo some time

Its like every thing about this car..... Makes me nervous!!! That and the fact I haven't really wiggled a spanner in anger in 10 years!

Back in the old days I had mercs BMW's even a jag and a Porsche and shed loads of Jap import stuff - but nothing has ever made me this edgy!!! I think its coz none of it comes in a nice new shiny box from a shop, and none of it looks 'normal'
