ball joint splitter?

So, splitters? My two I have been modified for various Hillman joints where depth is the difficult bit and so have had a lot of the fork chopped off, time for new....... Anyone know what width would fit best ? Especially on the bottom where the bottom link one seems quite close?

The bottom one is the easier of the 2 IMO. Fork type splitter straight in and hammer away :D The top one has more distance between solid surfaces for the fork type splitter to wedge into so you end up hammering the fork all the way in and not achieving very much. A couple of thick spanners wedged underneath does the trick. Well it worked for me :D

I usually release the bottom one first so the lower arm is not supporting the weight of the swivel pillar whilst I attack the top one. If you're replacing the pillar anyway it won't matter too much if you destroy the joints in the process of removal so get whacking :D

if you use a fork you will more than likely split the boots. A puller is much easier if you can find one to fit. Mine luckily fitted thd steering box tie rods the side rods and the top ball joint so far and was very easy with no nasty loud bangs..

Well everyone...... Just checked the book...... Sprayed everything with another coat of penetrating oil ready for the morning.

If I read this right I feel quite ill  I might phone in sick lol

Calliper off.... So brake pipe snapped then I suppose

Flexi off the leg....... Another small headed thing to strip.....

And then there's all the mud, rust and crud coated ball joint nuts to undo, round off and destroy

And of course then snapping the, bleed nipple off whilst I try to bleed the when its all back together

Something tells me I'm not looking forward to this......... Wish me luck everybody

.......... I may be some time :(

That's the way, start with a good positive attitude

Just take it slow, and be super careful with the smaller fixings, if you've got a heat source handy then use it, a bit of heat always seams to help, although it's not so good on nylocs that you might want to re-use :D

Richard...... Thanks  just needed a little pep talk

The good news is....... Its done and it was EASY!!!!!!!!!!

5 hours start to finish including digging out all the old tools. Most impressed with myself and the straightforward engineering under the skin of a p6 :D

In fact it was so straight forward I put the dodgy steering rod back in so I could have test drive and the steering is transformed, softer, more precise and all together more well mannered - can't wait for the new side arm, that should tighten up the slack even more  I think I'll order that and a top & bottom set of boots next week - only a couple of hours work innit

Back ok topic.......... Draper scissor type Balljoint Separator...... Fantastic! Why didn't I get One 20 years ago? €14 well spent I reckon..... The hardest bit was getting it OFF the joint afterwards

Thanks for all the advice & encouragement guys :D
