Ebay's a Queer Carry On

I just recieved my complete set (all 4) light clusters including gaskets, bulbs and lenses for £50.00.

I have inspected them and they look as though they have never been fitted to a car and are like new.

Ebay truly is a queer carry on

Strangely in my spares box I found a front light unit I needed for the S1 & it also looks like it's never been fitted (& had a label with "17 Feb 88") though I would have thought I'd have pulled it out of a car. Then checked the other one in the car & it's lovely too. Strange but appreciated. The rears in the car are very good too so I've given them all a good coat of Hammerite type paint on the rear of the units to try & keep them like that.

I have refitted all my light clusters with no gaskets at all!!
I did buy a replacement set ,but decided that they hold water like a sponge and therefore will keep it in contact with the light unit and also the wings metal!
Having no gaskets doesnt make them rattle, and all the water freely drains away!!
Air gets well in round the area's and dries, blows out any drops of water!!

That's one of the best bits of advice I've seen on here for ages, Pilkie. Another option might be to cut your own gaskets using rubber sheet rather than foam, but I thoroughly approve of the idea of getting air round the back of the lamps. If you can't keep water out, ventilate is one of the best anti corrosion advices there is!

Chris

You are still using the gaskets between the lenses and the bodies ? That seems to soak up water as it degrades
I've never seen the point of the gaskets between the lamp units and the car bodies
In the front wing there's a ledge (?) under where the light unit sits with a tiny drain hole .Well worth enlarging the hole

NOPE!!! No gaskets at all!!!
No point in using any of them at all!!
Their only purpose is to cause a water trap and promote rust!!

Hmm! Enlarging that drain hole seems a good idea though in two minds about leaving out the gaskets, the outers at least. They seem to protect the covered part of the units pretty well & the paint should now protect the exposed parts. I'll give it some thought though, drainage & ventilation also seem a good idea.

YEP!!! :D
Will make a few more quid for the garage fund!! 8)

Well down LOL

It is a bit of a trek from me from Sheffield though; being a collect only auction.

Someone "won" my FE Victor headlamps in early January & wasn't very forthcoming with the readies  & me being a patient sort of chap I left it for 3 weeks then sent a gentle reminder to be told Oh! sorry you've not had your money we sent your cheque but can we have your address & we'll get a cheque off to you straight away :? (opened non payment dispute at same time) so I left it another couple of weeks & still no cheque so sent another friendly message but got no response, so I closed the dispute & let ebay give him non payment strikes against the items. The thing I can't understand is why he's ruined his perfect ebay reputation for £18 I mean if he had a problem such as sudden financial embarrasment I would have been understanding & simply re-listed them

Chortle

Makes you wonder how they sent the first cheque if they didn't have your address.

One of the new,and IMHO  stupid rules on Ebay,is that a seller can ONLY leave no feedback or positive!! :?
When you get some twat like that messing you about, sellers should be able to leave negative for all to see that they are a time waster!!
If I were you I would name them on this forum,so we can all avoid dealing with them!!
All ebay will do is give them a strike and aslap on the wrist and say "naughty naughty!!!"
Do other sellers get to see the strikes??
Another thing is not being able to see who you are bidding against,as its bidder 1,2,3 etc!!
Before, we could see if a pattern was there with somewone self bidding with another ID!! Or if a mate is bidding we can, either avoid it or have a chat with them to see who wants it most!
Also some buyers dont seem in a big hurry to leave + feedback when they have had the item for some time," over 6 weeks!!! in one instance!" and have not raised a complaint with the seller,if they have an issue with it!!! :?
As a buyer, and seller!!! When I sell an item, I expect + feedback from buyers,or to contact me asap if not happy,to resolve the issue!!
I will leave feedback once I know the seller is happy ,and has left theirs!!
As a buyer I leave + feedback straight away,or asap! And complain to the seller asap for a resolution,I then leave feedback depending on result and the response of the seller!!!
ITS COMMON COURTESY AFTER ALL!!!!!

Here Here Oh & his user name was sm3738 As far as I know nobody else gets to see the strikes, I dont know how many strikes you're allowed but as these were 2 separate items he got 2 separate strikes from me  & I know what you mean about the only allowed to give positive feedback thing it's a bit annoying but you can still give them a bad message though

Regards Colin (100% positive)

Hi well i want my say now i HATE HATE HATE ebay its so naff , its so open to rip offs and easy to push up the price of an item if you have mates, 3 of you can fix prices so easy, some buyers never leave feedback and most want something for nothing, i now keep what i have or bin it im so fed up with ebay, is there a better site than that.
regards
marcus ( i feel better now)

I respect your opinion on Ebay, and agree it is open to abuse!!
If you want to bin your unwanted classic car items, rather than let other owners have the chance of getting much needed part thats your choice!
Why dont you take them to classic car shows and have a small garage clearance stall?
I normally have a boot full of stuff to sell!!
When you find that you need a very hard to get part, and your car wont go or pass its MOT without it!!and you find the only place to stand any chance of obtaining it from somewhere in the WORLD!!! is via ebay, unless you want to try ringing every dealer in the UK and further afield!
I recently bought via an auction site similar to ebay,an extreemly rare set of wheel trims! They were advertised wrong, and as it turned out, I was only person in the world that bid on them!!!
They cost me £50 inc p/p from the other side of the world!
I know for sure that I can sell them all day long in the UK or the US for 5 times that!!
Chances are you will know what its worth to you,so dont get caught up in a bidding war!
ANY auction site on the net, at a show,or even an Antique auction house, can be manipulated ,even by the auctioneer  !
All you need is a few mates to bid to push the price up as you say.
Hopefully we are all price savvy enough when it comes to knowing what to pay,and whats a rip off!!
If the item you want to sell is only worth 99p - £2 ish at an autojumble then an ebay buyer is not going to pay £5 for p/p!!!
It really is only one big game of poker in a way!!!
Cat and mouse,bluff,risk,gamble,chance,luck!!
Best not to take it seriously, and have fun with it!! Otherwise you will go doolally!!

Last time I sold a boot full of stuff, my car wouldn't start and I had to walk home!!

What's that big hole for on the O/S? :D

Oh by the way I relisted the headlamps & got £16.00 each for them, the man came from near Glasgow on Saturday & paid cash now that's a pleasing conclusion to the saga

Regards Colin
