Hello Stan,

Exciting times hey....can't wait to see the outcome... :D

All the best,
Ron.

Thanks Ron...yep...pretty exciting...and time-consuming! :)

Cheers,

Probably not worth the effort of galvanising the panels as I believe that paint doesn't like sticking to it. It can be expensive as they based the cost on the post dipped weight. Hot galv might damage the panels.

Do something with the inside of the panels and seal where the skin meets the frame. ever heard of POR15?

I reckon its gonna be BRG!!
While we are on the paint subject?
What' the overall opinion on having all the steel panels, dipped, stripped, fully galvanised, and etch primed before paint?
Obviously the bonnet and boot wont need it,just a V V good prep.
I have now got a full set of near rust free panels,I am about to undertake the same job on mine sometime this year!

All probably a good idea, I've seen how much better galavanised cars last compared to non-galv, but at what expense ?

Etch primer helps, and also make sure you get plenty of paint on the inside of panels, I'm sure half the problem we have is caused by poor protection on the reverse of panels.

Final option - Fibreglass panels, never worry about them rusting again !

I would have thought that having a base unit fully galvanised was a good idea though.

I have a strange feeling that one of the staff writers on 'classics' magazine is having that done to his 3500S. Must look at the article again. He had the shell completely stripped and blasted.

Dave

All got to be done by Friday/Saturday...including the roof re-colour possibly. Ferry to France/Belgium next Sunday.

You can't beat a good deadline for added stress/excitement*

Hope it goes well. Can't wait to see the results, it might inpsire me to get cracking on mine.

Sealing the panel edges and painting the insides/backs with Por-15 sounds like a good idea.

Bare-metalling has become an over used term
It's only as good as the person doing it - taking off all the old paint and just a quick coat or 2 of primer is probably worse than leaving sound old paint on

When I had the NADA painted I was very fortunate to find a really superb painter speciallising in exotica where money was no object. We discussed galvanising as this was my initial idea too. His view was that, even with dipping and then baking the panel to get all the moisture out of it, there would still be small amounts of rust and moisture in the seams - particularely in areas where a skin is wrapped over a frame like the doors. If this is then galvanised the effect is to trap the moisture etc in place, and over time this then bubbles out. His preferred solution was to use a very very zinc rich primer. Same principle, but because it is a paint, there is the ability to allow a certain amount of breathing which solves the problem. This is the painting spec we used:

Bare metal primed with 2 pack epoxy based 80% zinc primer

Over coated with ICI epoxy adhesion primer p565-895-1

Filled with Plastic Padding Ultima polyester filler

Spray filled with Upol reface spray filler

Final preparation finished with 320 grit dry production paper

Primed with 2 pack epoxy primer surfacer

1.5 coats of colour wet on wet straight over the epoxy primer

Wet flatted with 1000 grade w/dry followed by 3 coats of colour

Wet flatted with 1200 grade w/dry followed by 2 final coats of colour clear coat mix (50% with De-Beer 103 2k clear coat)

The zinc primer was hugely heavy, a 5 litre can was very nearly a two hand lift, so we're talking a grade or three up from the sort of zinc primer you'd buy from Halfords! The other key action that doesn't stand out in the spec, is that he waited a long time between treatments to let things go off, breath and harden properly between different applications, up to a week in a warm dry environment in some cases.

Patience people...you wouldn't want to see a lady half-dressed. would you?

The wait will be worth it...I promise! 8)

Finally...finally...got The Tart back from the sprayshop this afternoon and made a start on getting her back together. Not easy as I'm working outside...and the clock's haven't changed yet! Clock is ticking though...leaving here Saturday evening to overnight with my mate in Hinckley then off down the M1 on Sunday at sparrow-fart for the Dover - Dunkerque ferry.

Finish work at 2 on Friday so pics will (possibly) be up tomorrow...but more likely Saturday. :(

Bear with me guys!

Cheers,

Mmmmm, Grey, that was one colour I hadn't considered.

Don't keep it under a cover, all the new paint is very likely to microblister, let the air get to it.

It's pretty safe now H...it's actually been painted for a week. Went back in on Wednesday for compounding and finish after it had fully hardened off.

OK, OK...I only stopped for a quick coffee...I'll go and get on with getting all the trim in...plus...etc, etc

TBH it can (and most likely will) microblister under a cover well after the paint has fully hardened off. I wouldn't be taking the chance. Nice shade of Grey though........

Point taken...but it's a toss-up between that and keeping the overnight rain off.

New garden groundwork project starting next month...including a base for a new garage/workshop (hopefully) going up at the end of April. :)

Is that a Cover Systems cover? Mine is breatheable and and not entirely waterproof but it does keep the (bird) crap off the paint too.

(Almost) all fitted up just before the light went then....one or two bits to sort when I get back.

So who guessed red? Probably quite a few! :D
