PAE .... Sleipnir???

Interesting.... Yesterday I did 60 miles of mixed driving and the fluid level stayed put.... Need to have another good prod around by the sound of it!

I've had to take the car off the road because of the fluid loss. I have been investigating but i'm not entirely sure where the fluid is going.

I've taken a video of the exhaust. There is some smoke coming out so this could be fluid in the servo, but couldnt find any when i poked in the hole in the servo:

The front calipers look dry...

Around the brake master cyclinder and reservoir does seem to have something around there which could possibly be brake fluid - underneath there is something dripping down under the steering box/brake master cylinder:

The rear brakes look dry but there is some fluid of some sort on the bottom of the diff, but this could be from the front of the diff which has a definite leak.

On this front i have a spare diff i procured from our friends from Northern Ireland who rally their p6. They replaced it with a jag irs.

I intend to swap the diff on. I've taken the rear calipers off the diff and the insides look like this:

How far should i dismantle these callipers? They appear to be in a very good state at this level. Is it worth dismantling further??? Is there anything else i should do with the diff before putting it on?

Thanks,

RIch

Both of those pics show the same side, the side where the seal isn't, so a look from the other viewpoint might show more. You have to weigh up whether being that far in you go all the way and replace the seals, as it will be easier now than later, but against that if you do you might find that the bore is damaged so that would need sorting. Even if that is the case though, it's still easier now than later, when it's all back on the car. That said, if they are the calipers off your car, and they were in use until you removed the diff, without any signs of leaks, then there's no reason to think they'll leak when you refit them. So, in summary, yes with an if, no with a but......

I'll go in further then - the other side also looks clean but like you say if anything needs fixing or changing this is the time to do it :)

Thank you (as always :) )

It looks more condensation due to the cold weather rather than smoke, so no worries there.

This looks more like oil and it will destroy that lower arm bush, if it hasn't done that already. I would try to pressure wash the area and fix the leak.

I'll try a pressure wash - that's a good idea. If that isnt the brake fluid it must be steering fluid with where it's coming from? (I dont have power steering but the boxes can leak???)

You can always tell by the smell Rich as to what type of fluid that is. Brake fluid, EP90 and engine oil all smell completely different. Brake fluid you can wash away with water, the two oils you won't be able to, not unless you apply a degreaser in the first place.

A leaking steering box (lower seal around the drop arm) allows the oil to pass.

Ron.

It's chuffing cold out there at the moment... it'll keep for a day or two. i'll try washing it off soon. can't see how it could be engine oil. where it is it has to be atf, ep90 or brake fluid.

Hi Rich,

Was your fluid reservoir empty? It wasn't the hose linking the two that had failed?

When the seal on the piston within the cylinder wears to the point of leaking, from what I have seen, fluid runs down the pushrod. How did all that brake fluid end up on the outside?

Ron.

fluid reservoir was empty - it comes out inside the car when you push the pedal. Definitely the master cylinder.

The fluid on the outside i dont know as yet. I'm changing all the pipes in that area while i'm there anyway. The fluid could still be steering fluid from the steering box....

OK - well the fluid was brake fluid! (There is some oil down there but it's not the majority of it.)

The car now brakes really well. It hasnt been that good since I've had it. It's totally transformed it. Looking forward to sorting the rears and the diff now. This has to be the year i get the car as good as it should be :)
