PAS

air con units in NZ are a bit like Unicorns, talked about but never seen. I imagine the option was available ex factory from NZ but that would not be "character building" Its only since the advent of Jap used cars in NZ that we got luxuries such as power windows, aircon, power steer and front seats

I am certain if you bought a Rolls Royce or top end Merc here in NZ they would have searched the world just to make sure that you got manual window winders and crap ineffective car heating and as for electric adjustable side mirrors they would have told you that you just made it up....seriously.

I'm trying to track down the correct crankshaft pulley for my PAS conversion and have submitted a question to a seller of V8 parts on the TradeMe auction site. The Q&A is as follows"

Q: I'm looking for the correct engine pulley to enable me to convert my P6B to power steering. bogchook (19 ) 9:46 am, Fri 29 May
A: I have a P6B damper with a power steer pulley . I will take it off the damper for you so you can have the steel pullley only price is $30. 4:22 pm, Fri 29 May

Before I go pestering the guy with silly questions, can anybody enlighten me as to what he means by "P6B damper"?

In short no! The P6 pulley is a built up unit. The basic bit is the crankshaft stub and alternator pulley which includes an annular rubber ring within the unit which is meant to be a sort of damper, so perhaps he means this. Onto this is bolted a thrower disc in pressed tin, which could be to stop crankshaft oil leaks contaminating the rubber ring, and any additional pulleys for the A/C and power steering. So at max 4 components, yours will need three of them. You already have two so all you actually need is the actual PAS pulley. But to separate them is a bit bizarre!

UPDATE 5/6/09

I now have a PAS pulley in my possession.

Now for track rods. Can anybody confirm that I do actually need these?

The track rod and ends are different on the V8 with PAS, but the only reason for that IIRC was to make adjusting the FWA easier, so you can do your conversion using whatever trackrod type you have currently got on the car. (I won't tell anyone you've got the wrong one......... )

Thanks HarveyP6, you da man. I will however keep an eye out for PAS track rods - it'd obviously be better to have them if possible.

Cheers.

Does anyone know if there are any differences between the steering side rods across the range, i.e will a side rod for a 2000, or a 2200TC be ok for a V8 car? Is there any difference between PAS and Non PAS for these parts? Rover Classics list 2 seperate part numbers for V8 and 2000/2200, but JR Wadhams only seem to have 1 part listed

AFAIK all the steering side rods are the same, but IIRC somebody recently posted that very early cars had adjustable ones fitted, which can be replaced with the later type providing the car has an adjustable track rod, and this may account for the 2 different parts listings. PAS and nonPAS makes no difference either.

My god - my thread lives still! I just wanted to report my shame that, even though H was kind enough to accomodate me with a full PAS set up at a very reasonable price I STILL havent fitted it!

Its sat (albeit safely) still in my garage and if I am honest it still wont be fitted this side of November. I use my P6 as a daily driver and just couldnt afford it to be off the road for any length of time. however, that all changes in a couple of months so maybe then Ill finally get myself in gear to be able to have a proper crack. At least then when its done I can lend a hand to all those doing the same conversion!
