Pertronix Ignitor

Many thanks for that.
I couldn't get my car to even start with the pertronix installed (LU-183 - triangular baseplate). I didn't realsise that the dwell adjuster spring had to be removed and the screw turned right in. There still is a 2mm gap between the pickup and the sleeve - but it started first time even in the (very) cold - with no choke! After, that is, I'd sorted out the bad earth from the ignitor base plate to the distributor (the ignition light was not coming on so I new something wasn't quite right).

Also, I didn't get a cable tie in the kit that was mentioned in the instructions....

Googling around as I did at the time...the module is soooo sensitive to a slightly dicky earth. Worth a rub on emery before fitting...the module that is!

I'm not convinced the tolerances on the fixing holes are brilliant...and there's no latitude for adjustment, short of a needle file making them.

Still, sounds like yours is behaving itself even with 2mm. Nice one.

Cheers,

I don't mean to take things off subject here but I've just re-read some of this and something has occurred to me regarding a problem I've been having with my 2000SC. I bought a S/H Pertronix ignitor some time ago and fitted it and I've always had timing, idle and pinking issues with it and after strobing it with a super Snap On strobe light saw that the advance that it was getting at higher rev's was a lot more than I expected. I noticed you've all mentioned this dwell spring needs to be removed, is this something specific to the V8 models or would this be relevant to my 4 cylinder too? I got no instructions with my S/H kit and I'm hoping that this may give me a reason for the issues I've been having.
Any help on this would be very appreciated as my hairline is rapidly receding at this point,
Thanks,
Jon.

Hi Jon,

The 35D8 distributor on the V8 has a spring-loaded hex screw for dwell adjustment whereas your 25D4 doesn't so it's a different animal.

I'm not that familiar (yet) with the 4-pot dizzy, but I know Brian-Northampton has Pertronix fitted on his. Would be worth dropping him a PM - it's likely he'll still have the installation instructions which I'm sure he'd scan for you if so.

Also, Marvin Grebow at Pertronix is very helpful. You can email him at marving@pertronix.com

Good luck...hope you get it sorted!

Thanks Stan,
I shall get those instructions sorted soon as the 100,000 mile mark is approaching and I'm accumulating the required parts that need overhauling. Included in this is sorting the slightly wonky running and other rattles and fidgets.
My distributor is quite worn and I've managed to find another one from a 50,000 mile car which I shall use and get my current one reconditioned in the meantime, I'm looking forward to some cold days in the workshop getting the old lady back into good fettle again though. There is much work to be done,
Thanks,
Jon.

Yep...I make a list then encourage/depress (delete as appropriate) myself when I realise I need the stapler to add another sheet of A4!

Keep working Jon... :)
