Refurbing my new old alloys

Not enough progress for my liking but managed to finish one off yesterday.
Dammit i'm gonna get some summer mileage out of these yet!

That looks splendid!

One comment from experience with the same wheels on Lucky. His wheels have gone gently porous and let the air out of the tyres over the course of a week. I'd therefore be inclined to clean up the tyre bead area and give that and the well a good coat of paint. Not sure what would be suitable though, anyone any ideas?

Chris

Very nice indeed 8)

Would you mind putting the wheel nuts in and the centre caps. then taking another piccy ?

Just wondered what the complete look would be.

Richard

Chris,

I don't know how it would go with the paint (probably won't) but when I discussed a similar issue with my motorbike's wheels being 70's Italian quality the bloke told me that they could powdercoat them the colour I wanted and then put on a second coat of clear to seal them well and that did the trick on the Italian alloys.

I would suggest treating the interior like any other alloy part, etch primer, primer and gloss, should do the trick. You could also apply bead seal when fitting the tyres.

I must say I do find alloys to be more trouble than they're worth, especially on day to day cars, they always seam to leak, maybe it's just the old bangers I drive !

Thanks for the advice, i had rather been neglecting the unseen parts
I have now fully primed and painted everywhere.

Richard, i'll take another pic when the weather perks up!
Even though the chrome nuts look good, i'm ordering some black chrome covers for them to keep the wheels' look uncluttered.
So the idea is to have the nice shiny chrome centre caps against black spokes against nice shiny rims :D

I just adore that V12 Volga in your link. It looks fabulous and it took me a while to work out what the donor vehicle was! And yet when you look at the two cars side by side the body mods are astonishingly minor. I do hope they did something about the suspension....

Chris

Chris, there's virtually nothing Volga about it except the outer bodywork. The entire floorpan, suspension and drivetrain are BMW 850i. Basically they've split the welds on the monocoque and rebuilt it to fit the (heavily modified/custom-made) Volga outer panels.

Here's a pic of the finished look for you Richard, complete with flush fitting chrome valves :)
And freshly painted sill, not yet polished..
I haven't been able to source any 22mm caps for the nuts yet, other than crappy vauxhall plastic ones which i'd have to paint anyway..
Anybody know of anywhere?? I'd like the black chrome metal ones really, you can get them in 21mm max as far as i can find

I'd be tempted to just paint the nuts black, if you want the all black look. They may flake a little on tightening but a drop of touch up and you'll still get them looking smart. When are these wheels going on the car then? I'm after a set of Vitesse wheels for Jinx and am curious to see if yours go straight on, and with which tyre size!

Got a phone quote for refurbing the Revolutions the other day which looks to be about £65-70 per wheel which really equates to buying that set of new Revo's on ebay at the moment. I think I'm going to use Corazon's method to do them myself & just deal with future blemishes as they occur as lacquer doesn't last.
The missus just suggested 'Astonish' which she uses on the pots & pans. Might be worth a try.

Good god... I thought sourcing the wheel nuts was going to be the hard bit

So, what did you end up doing Richard? To skim or not to skim, SD1 Grease caps? and which studs and nuts to go for?

I've owned more cars than I care to remember over the years and most have worn non-standard wheels of some description, but I've never known it be so difficult to put some bigger boots on a car!

Didn't skim, cut off the lip on the P6 grease caps, SD1 studs (got them from a scrap yard), SD1 wheel nuts from Rimmers. I used 205/65 15 tyres which give the same rolling radius as the stock tyres, but are 20mm wider. Watch the D post clearance.

I believe you can get nuts which go onto the 7/16" P6 studs for the SD1 wheel, but never found out from where. That would have made it a lot easier.

Probably my shed, if I can find them.. I had my SD1 alloys fitted without any changes onto both my 'S' and the 2000SC. Picked up a set of 7/16" nuts, with specially sized spacers as several people in NZ had already done that and gave me the advice.

Thanks for that Richard, I'll just bite the bullet I think and get some Vitesse wheels, I've put a post in the wanted section but so far no news. I'm going to Kelham tomorrow night for the P6ROC get together, so I'll ask around there too. If they don't fit behind the D-Posts I'm sure they'll carve their own path in the body work soon enough... :D
