Took the plunge - got some pics now

Well, I have been looking for a pre '73 3500S for a while and would pay up to £2,500 for really good one, and perhaps £250 for a fixer upper.

So why am I driving 200 miles on Saturday to get a 1975 3500?

And I paid a lot of money for it; the Missus nearly choked.

Never mind - will post up some pics when I get it. 8)

It has been modified with a rebuilt 5 speed LT77 box, so not truly a 3500 now, but not really a 3500S either.

Also has a few engine mods, more of which when I get the car.

I have to get a train to get it but then I get to drive the 200 miles home :D

Re: Took the plunge

And it's Lunar Grey as well! (Well it is if I'm guessing right!)

Look forward to hearing more about it.

Have you been peeking?

Yes, it is the Lunar Grey one, and I might name it a Rover 4000S.

Anyone want some Minilites?

Re: Took the plunge

Well I picked it up today, and drove it 185 miles to my home. :D

All went well.

It has black seats, black door cards, black glove box covers, and a light brown/beige carpet. I may have to get some black carpets to finish it off inside. It is still fitted with what I am told is the original radio. Push buttons with a choice of LMMVV.

I had four wings, a door skin and front valance all stuffed inside the car, so with that lot rattling about, I don't know if there are any other squeaks and rattles that I should be worried about.

One of the doors has been reskined, badly, and there is a little rot in two of the wings, but only minor stuff.

There are a few problems which should keep me happy for a while, including the windscreen wipers which come on in the off position, and only stop when you put the switch to intermittent wipe?

Flickering brake warning light  and the handbrake doesn't go right down (probably connected)

Base unit is so solid it is frightening. The mountings for the rear trailing arms (inside the boot) are completly rust free and look original. Sills look perfect and unwelded anywhere - although I will be having a good look around it tomorrow.

Pics when I can get to them 8)

Cruising the A1 from London up to South Yorkshire was quite awesome :D :D

Or low brake fluid level.

Always nice to buy a car and drive it home without problems. Looked a nice car when I saw it, which was on ebay IIRC.

I thought that, so I pulled over right away and checked the level. It was fine.

Doesn't it come on when the front pads are low as well?

Re: Took the plunge

Both front and rear pads can have sensors,so either could be worn. Also the brake fluid caps sensor can be faulty, either dirty, saturated or sticking a bit.

Ooh, that looks nice! Love the Minilites... Also looks as if its had new rear springs? Its sitting nicely up at the back. Good luck with the car, hope you enjoy it. 8)

See this for sale on a front garden in Essex on ebay? Same one? It was at a grand when I looked, what sort of money was it? Also are the Minilites really being removed?

Yep at number 66.

It was a bit too much money, but then it did have all of the engine mods I would have done, plus a few more.

Not sure about the minilites. They are proper rover minilites, refurbished and brand new tyres, so I might keep them.

Stick with the Minilites! At the very least you'll get lots of Ooh's and Aah's from anyone who knows there stuff about P6's!

Looks like a good buy. What are the engine mods then?

Ok - here goes - all mods told about

This is what I would have done but is already completed

Rebuilt LT77 5 speed gearbox. Lightened and balanced flywheel. Mallory dual point distributor and Magnecor 8mm plug leads. Four branch tubular headers. Pair of stage 1 unleaded cylinder heads. Calibrated speedometer. New oil pump. New 3 piece clutch. K&N air filter. Kenlowe electric fan and high capacity 3 row radiator.

Then there’s what I probably wouldn’t have done, but quite like :-

New 4 litre cross bolted V8. Piper RP4 high torque cam and followers. New rocker shafts. New water pump. Steel rockers. Cloyes duplex timing chain and sprockets. New clutch master and slave cylinders. Offenhauser dual port inlet manifold. Weber 500 carburettor. Facet red top fuel pump, with Malpassi fuel pressure regulator. Refurbished Genuine Rover 6JX14 Minilte wheels (part number CRC 3628) fitted with Hankook 185X14 90H (?) tyres with nearly new tread, and locking wheel nuts. Overhauled power steering pump.

And some other stuff which I’m really not quite sure about but may have been needed?

High torque gear reduction starter motor. RPI engineering A&P electronic ignition power amp. Correct ignition coil and ballast resistor. In car mounted fuel pressure gauge. Rossini up rated front brake discs. Green stuff front brake pads. Aeroquip brake hoses. New power steering box.

That's some engine they built there, bet it sounds pretty good through those headers too.

What are the Rossini disc like? They sound like a good idea but I've heard mixed reports of grabby feel, increased noise and even cracking around the holes. I'm planning a trip to the Alps next year and was thinking of fitting some to help disperse some heat on the long descents.

Cheers,

No 66, what is that about? What sort of money was the car? Cheers Jim

You said you had seen it on a front garden in Essex. Well it was; at Number 66.

It was just over my £2,500 budget, but I am happy with that.
