Re: What have I done!!

On the danger of posing a very stupid question .... Wouldn't a good old 2200TC engine fit in there?

Re: What have I done!!

2200TC engine is probably a bit big.

I guess what you really need is any engine that will bolt straight up to the gearbox. Don't suppose it really matters about the performance at this stage, just something to get it on the road.

Are there any other engines that will bolt straight up ?

I suppose you could have pulled the engine and box out of that Minor, wouldn't have been fast but would have been nice and simple.

Re: What have I done!!

Will pose the different engine question on the T register forum! :)
No doubt I will get a few tututs from the staunch originality anoraks, but who cares its my car!
And it will be undoable!!
Will measure it up for space when its home, gotta fit a rad in as well as that was nicked also, but thats easy to sort out!!
There is an old chap I know who totally restored a 1949 MGTC back in the 80's,he is the type to have an engine in the corner of his garage doing nothing,he currently has an early Mk2 Jag and a Riley RME.
Will have to pay him a visit this weekend and get him over for a looksee.

Re: What have I done!!

That's what I was getting at - what else had the same engine - Wolseley 4/44 , any Riley ?
What is this engine ? OHV or OHC? How many BHP do you need ? Front or rear sump bowl ?
Then I'm sure we can up with some suggestions

Re: What have I done!!

There are plenty of engines that will fit, anythings possible.
Theres a chevy V8 in the states,a straight 6 triumph in one and a rover V8 ive read about!
As to what will bolt straight in with minimum fuss i have no idea?
Till I see and study the space and can visualise what may fit in I wont know, and nothing is in the way of the sump!
As for power, even if I can bung in a Morris 1000 eng and box that will do me,just want it driving!!
Am scanning Ebay for any local scrap RWD classic cars with a running eng/box that I can buy cheap and play with!

Re: What have I done!!

I'm pulling the 1600 out of my P3 at some point, same year too  Although I haven't had it running yet.

Re: What have I done!!

You could do a lot worse than the B18 Volvo engine.
If it were my car for mucking about in, I'd get it going with an engine/box combination
that grabbed my fancy while making sure it was fully undo-able and then set about finding
the correct engine for it to have in the corner for when I want to sell it on again, then the
new owner can decide whether he wants it as is or back to original.

Re: What have I done!!

At the moment any local classic car eng/box for sale that can be heard running or even test driven are in the mix of possibles!!

Re: What have I done!!

Well of course, and it has to be SU's! :)
Been getting to know my way around the MG today, and first investigation signs are very promising!
The 2 new radials fitted in 2008 to move it about were only fitted as the 2 of the 5 new crossplies fitted in 1991 had perished, all brakes and susp dampers have been replaced, probably back in 1991 when crossplies were fitted.
It looks like the owner in 1991 had started to restore it after a 10yr lay up from 1981 according to the date tags on the rear number plate!
Either he gave up or died as it was then sold and exported back to the UK in 1996.
The main body tub frame is constructed of ash wood and ive only found 3 places that are a bit rotten, these sections hopefully can be replaced without major surgery.
The metal body panels that fit over the ash frame were only ever tacked on,then when the trim was fitted it covered up the tacks.
My first thoughts are that I do not have to remove the tub from the chassis, just unbolt the wings and any other panels, leaving the tub with front and rear chassis and susp areas exposed for ease of access and refurb.
All unbolted metal panels can be sorted and painted off the car,"Considering having the SPL process treatment on all just metal panels",doors are wood frame with metal overpanels, paint and trimmed and stored ready to bolt back on once the tub has been painted,engine/box sourced and fitted,"poss MGBGT",and engine bay area electrics sorted.
I will have to refurb the brakes again, and rebush the front suspension as rubbers are a bit tired,
but there is no movement/wear in any of the kingpins or other steering/susp joints, suggesting that it also was overhauled back in 1991.
The dash panel needs a full restoration or replacement as dials are damaged, its even got a clock built into the bottom of speedo.oil, water amps dial and a rev counter.
Right thats me fed and watered and blog updated, ready to get back to it...
Bonnet, bumper and front lower wing divider panel are off, both doors off, left wing and running board fixings soaking overnight, hope to have front stripped to bulkhead and rear wings, tank etc off by tomorrow eve.

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

I'd forgotten it was LHD .In that case shove any suitable engine in it and blame the Americans........
After all , they put V8's in E Types and Mk2 Jags and some would say that's an improvement

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

No rude and suggestive language on this forum please!

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

I finally got the body and chassis seperated this weekend. :D
Didnt come across any more than 6 stubborn fixings, all chopped with the cutting disc.
All the little tangs that hold brake pipes and loom in position are as solid as the day they were put on,and the brake pipes look like new under the minor dirt layer!
The old material, woven type loom covering is still in good nick, but as the wiring is 58 yrs old a new full loom will be fitted.
Now to strip, clean, rebush, repaint and refurb if req all the parts attached to the rolling chassis.
Once the chassis is sorted then I can drop in a complete running donor engine and box,as its easier to do any adaptations when the chassis is as it is.
So I am on the lookout for a 1970's MG Midget with a 1500 eng/box thats a good runner but rusty to buy and break.
Or a Triumph spit/dolly with a 1500tc!!
pics....

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Don't get the Triumph 1500 engine as it has a weak crank. The 1300 is better

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Good point Dave.
It will have to be a TC with carbs and manifold on drivers side whatever engine I find, and no overdrive!!
Even a Herald with a TC conversion!
Whatever I get,I must be able to hear it and possibly drive it a bit!

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

When you split the chassis and body, I bet you didn't expect to find that TR6 underneath :D  .
The whole car looks to be in remarkable condition for age.

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Its a stonkingly good chassis, and the body only has very minor dinks and no rust to speak of either!
Just finished downloading this little video!!
