Re: What have I done!!
Well of course, and it has to be SU's!
Been getting to know my way around the MG today, and first investigation signs are very promising!
The 2 new radials fitted in 2008 to move it about were only fitted as the 2 of the 5 new crossplies fitted in 1991 had perished, all brakes and susp dampers have been replaced, probably back in 1991 when crossplies were fitted.
It looks like the owner in 1991 had started to restore it after a 10yr lay up from 1981 according to the date tags on the rear number plate!
Either he gave up or died as it was then sold and exported back to the UK in 1996.
The main body tub frame is constructed of ash wood and ive only found 3 places that are a bit rotten, these sections hopefully can be replaced without major surgery.
The metal body panels that fit over the ash frame were only ever tacked on,then when the trim was fitted it covered up the tacks.
My first thoughts are that I do not have to remove the tub from the chassis, just unbolt the wings and any other panels, leaving the tub with front and rear chassis and susp areas exposed for ease of access and refurb.
All unbolted metal panels can be sorted and painted off the car,"Considering having the SPL process treatment on all just metal panels",doors are wood frame with metal overpanels, paint and trimmed and stored ready to bolt back on once the tub has been painted,engine/box sourced and fitted,"poss MGBGT",and engine bay area electrics sorted.
I will have to refurb the brakes again, and rebush the front suspension as rubbers are a bit tired,
but there is no movement/wear in any of the kingpins or other steering/susp joints, suggesting that it also was overhauled back in 1991.
The dash panel needs a full restoration or replacement as dials are damaged, its even got a clock built into the bottom of speedo.oil, water amps dial and a rev counter.
Right thats me fed and watered and blog updated, ready to get back to it...
Bonnet, bumper and front lower wing divider panel are off, both doors off, left wing and running board fixings soaking overnight, hope to have front stripped to bulkhead and rear wings, tank etc off by tomorrow eve.
