Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Have decided that I will do all the chassis and susp/axle part painting on one warm day,so am going to get all the susp parts and other bits I want to paint/protect with rustbuster cleaned and prepped this weekend.
Using 3 of my gazebo side panels I can enclose the carport area and make a near wind/breeze free painting area, also it gets really hot like a greenhouse under there,so the paint will dry well!

The Rover and TR6 have taken a back seat for the last month,so both need a good bit of spit 'n' polish TLC this weekend.

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Made up a spit roast chassis turner this weekend to make life easier!! :)
After a bit of fine adjustment,"Health and Safety",, to my Heath Robinson affair,I can now adjust the chassis for easy access to any part of it! :)

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Hi all.
Ive just done a deal on a recon 1500TC MG Midget eng and box complete with carbs etc etc, ready to drop in and connect, sounds sweet, and got the speedo+cable/rev/temp thrown in as well,so I can make up a temporary dash.
Saves buying a complete car to break!!
I hope to collect this sat morn.
Just gotta hope for some better weather so I can get the chassis and bits painted, then start putting things back together!
ps have made the chassis turner a bit safer since then!

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Not my favourite engine but well done . Should be up and running soon ?

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Good idea that "spit roast" Pilkie. I was going to say, be careful the chassis doesn't roll off the stands but then I noticed you had some end-stops designed in  . Once you've done the chassis you could build a fire under it and spit roast a hog - the mother of all barbeques:) . Glad you found an engine and gearbox so you can put the right motor in.

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

It was a bit shakey at first, and the chassis did nearly fall off!
At least the engine/box is from its son or granson so to speak, keeps the underbonnet looks similar, and the weight and power output is not far off the same.

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Hi all.
Well I have almost finished the laborious task of cleaning all the chassis and susp components ready for painting.
To that end I have almost bought a sand blast cabinet with ample grit! :)
A bit late now maybe but well worth having if I win it at the right price, and,I can pick it up,, :) but seller wont do a deal!
Ive also bought a 3m x 6m heavy duty gazebo side with windows to fit onto the carport to make a closed in area for painting the chassis etc,a bargain at only £30,fits perfect and keeps the wind and rain out!! :)
Fitted on a taut wire line so I can swish it back just like a curtain and tie it up out of the way!
Effectively doubling the undercover work area! :D

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Hi all.

Well I couldnt wait to get the rest of the parts cleaned,so ive painted the chassis! :)
Hung it up on 2 good straps so it could be spun round in the garage, and gave it 6 large cans of stoneguard overpaintable.
The finish is excellent satin black, not sure if I will overspray with gloss or not yet?
It will need a good week to go off before I decide!!,
Anyway I want to get a sand blaster and have a play on the smaller parts!!

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Hi all.

Well ive got the next week off,so I can get stuck in to the MG!
The parts I need have arrived, ive bought plenty of spray paint, and treated myself to a
great sand blasting cabinet, that can take a 15" wheel!
Spent saturday re-arranging things in the garage, and having a general tidy up!!!

Ive been told that blast cabinets can kick out a lot of dust,so am going to try to seal up any gaps to keep dust leakage to a minimum, otherwise I will be wearing full bio-hazzard kit!
But I do have an old drag about hoover that I can connect up with gaffer tape to the dust outlet port!

Hopefully by the end of the week I will have the chassis back to a rolling condition with all susp/axle/brake components blasted and painted.
Got a show to go to B/hol monday,so got to give the rover a good clean, its also due to go in and have the lower front wing brown bits painted and its full, final mop and polish.
Right time to go and connect it up and have a play to set it up properly..

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Good progress on the MG Dave, and a nice addition to the tool collection that sand blaster, wish I had a garage

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

So far so good, got it set up,and did a test bit!! :)
Fitted up my old hoover to the outlet, used a plumbing grommet that fitted tight in the outlet and the hoover nozzle fits tight into that, and no gaffer tape,,,and I can turn on/off via my foot! :)
Got extra protection just incase, but had to take the track suit off as it was a bit warm!

Neighbour spotted me getting stuck in!! :)

Heres a pic of before "R",hand cleaned "M" and sand blasted "L" to compare!!.

And not to be a jubilee party pooper had my own little street party at lunchtime, and casper wanted to join in!!
Many thanks Ma'am for giving me and millions more the Tuesday off without pay!! :x

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Its coming along bit by bit!
It is very hungry for air,so have to let the compressor cool down after a 15min session!!
Threads were well protected before cleaning!

Drums, springs and pans + a few little brackets left to do!!

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Looks like you did a great job on that chassis - well done. That sand blaster looks like a good think too.
I know you are a bit of car fanatic but surely drinking Castrol GTX is taking thngs a bit far  Now, before you tucked into that Jubilee Lunch, I hoped you sang the National Anthem?

Aren't they so so simple and easy to work on at that age! We'll have to find you a P2 to work on next!
