Re: MG TF1500 project.Painted and engine/box in.

The engine and box are finally fitted to the chassis with new clutch.
Just got to treat the cast manifold to some heatproof black paint once shotblasted, get a heatsheild and gaskets then refit along with the carbs.
Converting to dynamo couldnt of been easier, hydraulic clutch conversion flexipipe problem has been sussed out.
Engine mount works perfectly, got to fit a steady rod for engine "A'la V8".
Still need to get the prop spacers made up.
Nice chrome rocker cover should arrive soon!
Tomorrow will be spent clearing space in the spare bedroom for all the freshly painted panels, bits,to be kept safe till refitting time, all 24 of them!!!

Tomorrows jobs will be clean and paint the lower firewall and bulkhead supports, then I can lower the body into its final position,
Clean, paint and rebuild the dual clutch/brake master cyl,and fit the pushrods to the pedals.

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

One benefit of being single is that you can keep yopur painted panels in your lounge !

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

looking good :) great to see progress!

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Sunday I cleaned and shot blasted the firewall, bulkhead supports and the dual brake and clutch master cylinder.
Today I gave them a coat of redoxide then top coat of black gloss, the master cylinder had a coat of 5 wheel silver and black.
Fully rebuilt the master cylinder and fitted the 2 pushrods.

Excellent work Dave, coming together nicely :)

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Hi Pilkie,

Top job, that looks really nice... :)

How do you go about sourcing the necessary parts such as brake rubbers etc. Are they still largely available or do you have to compromise? Have you had to make any parts from scratch?

Ron.

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Hi Ron.
If you go to page 8,the last post you will see that I had to design and fabricate a new engine mount for the donor engine, also had to convert from a rod clutch to a hydraulic clutch by means of the dual master cylinder that fortunately bolted in exactly the same place as the std brake master, then adapt the bottom of the pedals to accept the pushrods!
Fortunately almost everything is available with a very few exceptions,at least all I need is easy to get. "So far!!!"

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Thanks Pilkie.. :D Seems I need glasses now for reading too... :(

That reminds me, :) Now I am not working,I need to go have my eye tested as I am overdue, and am sure that I need new specs!

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Been cleaning and painting a few more bits and bobs as I find them and storing them safe.!!
Ordered a few things like gaskets, body fitting rubber seals, brake shoes, front side lights, chrome bits for rear lights, and a full 4 wing and step nut and bolt fitting kit. "Saves restoring 60 nuts, bolts, and washers!!
Ive fitted the carbs, manifold, completed the hydraulic clutch conversion, lowered the body onto the chassis and adjusted, trial fitted new floorpans and fettled, fitted rear wings and sill step, cleaned and lubricated the nos brake pistons and fitted new springs and shoes.
Slowly,carefully its coming together!! :D
Ive just got to be carefull I dont spend time fitting something then have to undo it to do another bit!

On the road by Xmas ?
The only hurdle is getting it registered with the DVLA,as they can drag things out!
Ive got to go to the local office on monday with all the info I have on it,import docs etc and see what else is needed.
That and if any parts I still need are on back order!!
As no MOT is required for pre 60's cars now,I dont know if they will insist on it having one for 1st registration, not a problem in the great scheme of things.
They may want to see it,so i've either got to mot and insure it to drive it there or book a mates flatbed to take it there,as they dont like coming to you,and if they do it could add weeks to the process.
My realistic target is 1yr after buying it,which is 1wk before an Easter weekend car show!!
Any sooner is a bonus!
Ive also got to spend a few days replacing the Rovers headgaskets!

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Finished off the brakes by painting and fitting the hubs, and new inner hub seals as bearings are fine, but 1 hubnuts thread "The lh threaded one!" was knackered so ive ordered 2 new ones,as the other,"rh thread" one maybe on its way out!.
Just got to bleed and adjust them when the time comes, ditto the clutch.
Placed the fuel tank in position,so I could check the alignment of the spare wheel carrier.
The propshaft spacers arrived courtesy of my brother and the machine shop CNC night shift,
Marked them up and drilled holes,,,A PERFIK FIT!!!
And as the evening drew in,there was quite a nice sky over the cars!! :)

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Wiring loom is going in ok,just gotta stretch the grommets on to it!!

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Good progress Pilkie - it's all coming together. You must have a good garage heater if your fingers are still managing the fiddly bits. Mine are numb after ten minutes!

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

I see that the exhaust manifold has been replaced at some time in the car's past life.

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

?? :?
The manifold is from a 1974 MG Midget 1500,and goes with the donor engine/box!
If it was from a Triumph 1500 then I think they had a twin port exh manifold!

No garage heater, but it is south facing, with a carport that acts like a greenhouse, and keeps the wind out, also a good full set of thermals, hikers socks under my track suit, and fingerless gloves help keep me toasty! :D
And if that doesnt work the padded overalls come out!
