Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Sorry - I haven't really read the whole thread so assumed that you still had the original MG engine - hence the BL flying plughole meaning that it was post 1968.

note to self: pay more attention! :?

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Also shows that the engine looks the part! :)

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

I can't help wondering if the MOT tester will mistake it for an RMB Gentry thanks to the Triumph engine.

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Its MOT exempt being 1954!!
I am not happy about pre 1960's now being exempt, and I will get it MOT'd,once the DVLA have sorted UK registration out and before it is sold.
My current MOT guy is oldskool, has been doing them since the mid 60's.

Bedankt Hans!! :)
Geniet op zoek!!
I think??

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

New electrics turned up today, minus the bulkhead grommet kit!
At least I can fit the items and prep the wires for when they do turn up!
Nearside engine side panel and wing go on tomorrow!!
Both have to be adjusted to fit before final tighten up,just like a P6!
And if I get a chance after wiring things up I will fit the other side!

Re: 1954 MGTF1500 resto.Engine/box in,body back from painter.

Both engine bay side panels now on.
Took a while to get them lined up,but once I had worked out where to start lining up and tightening up fixings from,I got there in the end!
Engine sits really nice in the bay space, nothing a little tweaking wont sort out when I fit the stabiliser bar!!

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Body panel and electrical refit underway.

The front wings are on,they just need a bit of fettling to fit right! :D
Wirings all connected on the bulkhead!! :D
Wings all fettled and trims fitted,I couldnt resist putting the grille on for a looksee!
Also allows me to see what space I have to fit a radiator, which is the next, and hopefully the last technical hurdle to sort out!

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Body panel and electrical refit underway.

The plastic rad fan that came with the engine didnt look very period,so I bought a 4 blade metal fan from a triumph herald that bolted straight on.
I've sand blasted it and painted it silver, and will fit tomorrow.
No luck in finding an original working or even repairable radiator!
So ive done some measurements, got a pic of an original one,and am having one made to fit the space available.
It will be a basic square tanked job,but if the maker can find a suitable top/bottom tank of a scrapper that he can use to make it look more period he will.
Should be ready about mid Jan,and at 1/3 the price of having an original,"if you can find one" rebuilt via the MG dealers!
Am going to my local s/s exh maker tomorrow, and ask him to pop over and give me a price and timescale to build a system.
Its a basic 1 box straight through system,so will be a doddle for them to make!

Have you got room for air filters ?
Only just dave.
The one you see needed a little angle to fit,and ive still got to cut the mesh to firm it up.
Theres still just under 1cm to play with, and the other fits no prob.

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Body panel and electrical refit underway.

Gosh Dave, that's tight. In fact I think it fails the Yorkie nice free inlet tract test! But then, provided it runs tolerably well we're all going to be happy on this one, eh! Best be very particular about the engine steady bar, though.

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Body panel and electrical refit underway.

Ah yes,the engine steady bar.
After holding the original and a longer P6 item in my hand and offering it up in different positions, vertical and horizontal, ive found the perfect place to fit the original in the horizontal with almost no modification.
The 1st picture shows the solid upright that bolts to the chassis and the tub then bolts to that.
One end of the adjustable steady bar, with bushes bolts directly to this in a spare hole on its side, then the other end, with a slight bend of its mounting bracket, bolts directly onto the lower exh mount stud when the manifold is in place.
Will make another bracket to connect to the top manifold stud.
The bar adjusts in the same way as the tracking on a PAS V8.

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Body panel and electrical refit underway.

i guess if the carbs do turn out to be too close you can investigate alternatives then...?

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Body panel and electrical refit underway.

The only alternative I would use,as I want to keep the SU's, would be a manifold set up that was slightly smaller,ie doesnt stick out as far from the block!
I might be able to machine down the carb outlet flange by 5mm,or another possibility is using the thinnest cone filters that have a taper,or D shaped chrome pancakes may work!!
As long as it drives ok,I could even leave them off and put a thin gauze across the inlet!
But I am confident that once ive trimmed the mesh to fit and firm it up,it will suck ok.
