Re: MGTF1500 resto.Waiting on parts to get stuck in.

Ive just had the rad back for a trial fit for size and to mark up for cap, pipes, mounts, before final fabrication next week, and it fits a treat!!
Tempted to leave it brass and not paint it satin black!
The bonnet and grille trial fit ok as well!!
Starting to look the part now!! :D
LHD carpets and new bumper have arrived!!
I have refurbed the mounting irons and brackets, but am a couple of bolts short to assemble bumper and overriders onto them before fitting to car.

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Waiting on parts to get stuck in.

Radiator and whole car looking fantastic Pilkie - nearly there.
Know what you mean about leaving the brass on the radiator, it would look nice. Though, I'm thinking it will tarnish pretty quickly unless it has a good coat of laquer?

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Waiting on parts to get stuck in.

Rigged up a big bottle to bleed the brakes without topping up,as I didnt want to be putting the ramp up and down all the time, and I could use a lever from underneath to operate the pedal,so made it pretty easy to do!

After I had cleaned and restored the bumper irons,I assembled everything ready to bolt into place when the time comes.
New bonnet and side step chrome trims still kept sealed up till needed.
Dashboard and instruments now complete, just the choke and start button to connect up once its in.

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Waiting on parts to get stuck in.

Although the radiator looks nice being unpainted, ideally it should be painted completely black so as to absorb as much heat as possible and thus radiate that heat as intended.

As Steve mentioned, it will likely tarnish very quickly if left unpainted, especially after a few heat cycles.

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Waiting on parts to get stuck in.

Yep,rad maker also advised to paint,as it would have to be made in a lot heavier duty metal to leave it as is.

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Waiting on parts to get stuck in.

The custom s/s exhaust is now made and fits great, just got to get and screw on the clamps and hangars.
Start it up,test for leaks and see how it sounds!

Ive also found a 3 in 1, amp, temp, oil gauge that will match near perfect the rev and speedo for that more in keeping look!
If I win it,I will make another dash and see what I think!
I will check the possibility of using the original dash and mounting them behind the octagonal chrome bezels!

Tomorrow I will make what I hope will be the final visit to the DVLA to get it registered, after a few minor but frustrating paperwork problems.
Radiator will be ready to collect on tues!!!
And ive just bought a pair of new brooklands aeroscreens.

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Exhaust done,rad going in,Got to sort DVLA!!

Picked up the custom radiator today, and will fit it tomorrow.
Exhaust is all mounted and it sounds very good.
Got a throttle cable to adapt,so I should be able to drive it in and out of the garage by the weekend as brakes and clutch all work.
Fit the Brooklands screens.
Rad grille surround has gone to the chromers,"NLA NOS or repro",and will buy a new center slat set,as it works out cheaper than getting the original 12 slats done!
Leather seat and interior trim kits should hopefully arrive next week.
DVLA visit went very well,as I got a guy who knows what he is doing, and said he felt my pain,re the other attempts!!
We went through what and why things went wrong before, and we checked paperwork etc 3 times,so that this time it will be right!
So hopefully,,, XXXX everything, all will be sorted and legal by middle of next week.

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Body panel and electrical refit underway.

Pilkie said:
I did spend a few evenings looking at them, trying to think of a way to mount the 2 round dials on the back of the original dash panel and use the octagonal bezels mounted on the front, giving the illusion of integrated dials.
The new ones are larger and mounting points on the original dash would get in the way!
The original middle cluster of oil, temp, amp are 3 seperate units totally the wrong shape to use modern dial innards.
I did not want to do anything to the originals that would affect the possible reconditioning of them.
At least the wiring wont be a problem!
Ive fitted all the pull switches, warning lights etc in the same location as original.
Heres a pic of the original.

Well after a long search,I finally found a suitable 3 in 1 amps, oil, water gauge cluster to use instead of the 2 small ones!
Still cant utilise the original dash and octagonal bezels, but think it looks the part and it will do the job!
If I feel I dont like the wood effect once fitted,I can cover it in the same biscuit vinyl as the interior trim is going to be!

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Exh/rad done, AND!! 524 YUR is LEGAL at last

YIPPIE>>> WAHAY>>> AT LAST!!!!

After all the frustrations and techincal hurdles thrown at me by the DVLA,its finally legal to drive on the road, although its not quite road ready,"roadworthy" yet!

1954 MGTF1500 now allocated Reg no; 524 YUR is now taxed, insured and the V5c arrives in a few weeks.
It wont take much over the weekend to make it roadworthy,so at least I can drive it a few 100 yds up and down to test things out before venturing onto the main roads.

Off to a classic show and jumble tomorrow with my nephew in his Mini, and will get some black/silver numberplates made up while there!

YEEEEEHHAAAA!!!!!

Fantastic job Pilkie, well done :)

Re: MGTF1500 resto.Exh/rad done, AND!! 524 YUR is LEGAL at last

Just thinking -
Does the speedo need recalibrating to suit it's new home ?
What method are you going to use to sell it ? If EBay will you get lots of MG purists asking silly questions?
