P6s in Greece

But if you head up to the north, we can arrange so that you can see a white TC.

Demetris

Thanks for the offer but a 1000km round trip  from Athens is a bit far :(

Dave

Spotted yesterday in Athens... bearing the old style (pre 1972) plates.
Judging by the roof rack, not only in regular use, but a real working classic... :D

Well I didn't see any P6s in Athens but I did see this little lot:

Hi Dave,
i hope that you had a good time. The weather for a start couldn't be any better!
The cars that you spotted were very popular over here up to almost 20 years ago.
Apart from the vintage Mercedes of course!

We had a brilliant time thanks. Yes the weather was great and we came back to a weekend of great weather here too.

The vintage Mercedes was a bit of a find. Lots of dust around though which must be a bit of hassle keeping cars clean. Lots of people using car covers.

I could've spent a day just wandering around the back streets looking for old cars. All of these were within a few blocks of the Acropolis.

Dave

Agreed. And the door cards look sufficiently careworn for it not to have been a recent retrim, so probably original. I wonder if that is a symptom of something odd like Malta assembly?

Nice wheels too.

Chris

I would say retrim. The front seats look a bit too plump and the back seats just look odd. It could have been done a while ago and had a bit of artistic license applied, or the door cards could be original but with repair patches stiched on the bottom. Who knows?
It seems an odd modification to do for one export market.

Mmm, and I wonder what the lump is on the speaker grille? I wondered about Malta as the door cards are the sort of thing that might easily have been done locally to make up local content.

Chris

The seats look as though they have been retrimed in vinyl. That's obvious.
But the door cards... i cannot tell really, if they are a retrim then they should have found a material very close to the original. Even the way it gets dirty on the drivers door looks original. I don't think there was ever a thing like local production of parts for P6 over here. Their market share was tiny.
The lump on the speaker grill is odd indeed. Probably it could be something sound related, as the car has a period Becker fitted.

Demetris

The speaker grill lump looks like an 80's alarm movement sensor to me.
I used to fit them back in the day :)

No Jim, although i have seen this webpage before.

Here's another one in Athens, not going anywhere for a while, as it came up in another local forum.

Still more 4-cylinder than 8-cylinder P6s in Greece, I guess :D

Yep, we searched with a friend once and we found that there were only a total of 5 or 6 V8 P6s officially registered in Greece.

How's this for rarity?

Demetris

Well I've been in Athens for a week now, and no Rover sightings as yet.
Plenty of nice old mercedes and bmws, but not a Rover..
This is just round the corner though, unsure if the UK market had them. V4 engine?
Thought it was a chevy nova when i glanced at it!

Shame about the footwear, it could do with a set of torq thrust wheels :D

You lucky....., you have been here and enjoing our little summer. :D
I had a couple of coleagues from UK today, visiting some field trials and they could not absorb enough sunshine throughout the day.

The taunus was a product of Ford Deutschland :!: and twin to Cortina. However there was never a Cortina coupe right?
For many years we were receiving both English and German Fords. I don't know the situation right now, but since you are buying Japanese cars made in England, Italian cars made in Brazil, German cars made in USA and so on, it doesn't really matter.

Mercedes and BMW were really very common. Literally thousants of them have been imported used from Germany, and the trend still continues.
Rovers (up to SD1 era) were always considered exotic rare birds. 8)
I need not say what did to the image of the company the late models.
