PAE .... Sleipnir???

How did that happen Rich? When you fit the cap, there should be no discernable pressure required. Looks as if either the cap or rotor were not compatible.

Ron.

There is none and it's been on for ages. Just one day won't start... same as when it last happened about 8 months back. I think the caps are suspect but obviously can't be sure....

Today sleipnir has sprung a leak from the radiator. It seemed to be losing for a while but i wasnt sure where from. The puddle forming under the car answered that question. I'll swap back to the original one I have in the shed and see what happens I guess. Always something to keep me busy!

well it's not leaking with the old rad I've put in, and it doesn't seem to be overpressurising, so hopefully that was as simple as that...

OK - not so successful. The old rad I had isn't as bad for leaks as the one i just took out but still does drip from the bottom.

It seems to let the water out of the bottom when the car stops not while it's going. Does this sound right for a faulty radiator before I get one of them reconditioned? I'm guessing heat soak means expansion of the coolant happens when the car stops rather than when it's running? Or is there something else wrong? Do i need to fix the rad before deciding if there's anything else wrong?

Most leaks happen when engine is cold due to contraction and antifreeze is very searching stuff.
Is the bottom hose dry at joint of water pump? could be running down behind hose at that point.
I use my coolant pressure kit to test for leaks on cold engines pressurized to 15PSI this finds them no probs.might be worth trying to borrow one if poss.
cheers.

Yes the pipes are all dry as far as i can see! This only leaks when the car is warm after a run and has stopped. Something to do with heatsoak i guess...?

OK - the older rad might be OK after all. There was a dribble from pipe at the bottom of the water pump going down the back where you couldn't see it. Top points to Clive there I reckon!

Also today I changed the O ring on the reserve tap - which seems to have stopped the smell of fuel. Also changed a couple of spade connectors on the low tension circuit in an attempt to solve the slow starting. I think it has worked, but hard to tell, as once it's started it always starts.

Hopefully these 2 will also have a good influence on the fuel consumption. It's been poor recently.

Hey all,

I've been getting a whiff of petrol now and again from sleipnir. I thought it must be the o ring on the reserve tap at first, but having replaced it and had a look from the sender it seems it was actually at the rear of the car:

Of course, at the moment i have a full tank of fuel. I think this is probably just the metal pipe has become holed. The question is what's the best way to replace it? Is this the send or return pipe? From how much fuel is coming out i'm guessing it's under some pressure? Are these parts available?

Thanks,

RIch

The thinner one is the return line. Personally, I'd slit the plastic pipe and remove it off the metal and replace it
with a new line, all the way to the front. Slip it further over the metal bit, or trim it where you think the hole is.
It could also be leaking because of it's age or the metal pipe could be corroding there.

Hi Rich
These plastic feed/return pipes due to there age now can and do break/fail.
Have had to replace these before for leaks, fitted new rubber pipes from tank to reserve tap and return.
Use a company called Think Automotive in Isleworth middx which does all types of pipes
including aeroquip /goodridge brake hoses and make up pipes while you wait.
Found them very good.
Clive.

Well i made the mistake of touching it to figure out whether it was the metal or plastic bit. The plastic immediately broke and I'm most of a tank of fuel down...

Yes, it needs a new fuel pipe front to back. And if one has gone, I'm guessing they all need replacing. So as the main feed is 8mm, I'm guessing the reserve is too? Is the return going to be 6mm if it's smaller?

Thanks in advance!

Rich

thanks - much appreciated :) The three quarters of a tank has mostly evaporated. Managed to capture a couple of gallons in a bucket. Expensive touch of a pipe there....

Hi Rich
Found old reserve pipes, on inspection noticed plastic pipe loose fit on union!
So cut pipe off and measured union fitting, made it a fraction over 5 mm pipe needed to fit.Was proberly a imperial size pipe they used.

I've got a spare set of fuel lines somewhere, ends are rusty like all but they haven't been full of fuel for 40+years! The fittings I think are BSP, standard copper gas pipe fittings for 8mm should fit the fuel sender unit and reserve tap should you decide to research alternatives?

I'm not a fan of regular rubber fuel lines anymore, they have a habit of perishing and going hard after a couple of years. Really high quality rubber hose should last a lot longer, can't recommend a source or spec myself. I'm soon going to be replacing the fuel lines in my P6 with braided teflon hoses and Aeroquip style fittings, should hopefully last a long time once done!
