Project AR J

A few photos of the work on the passengerside.

The main issue is the lower D-post unlike the other side there was too much rot on the corner to reconstruct the original profile.

I have used the seal to get as close to the correct profile as I can.

Sound the fanfare!!!

Got AR J's bumpstops welded on. Petrol tank in and managed to get to drive up and down the driveway.

I did have a head scratch when it wouldnt start, I drained a battery and went for a cup of tea and cleaned the garage up and then I realised that the brake fluid resevoir cap wires were off. reconnected and old AR J burst into life..

I do need to put the sill covers and rear wing on, reconnect the wiring but intend to get some miles on him this week. I also want to get the cavity wax in there too.

Well done :) . I wonder if you should dub this "Project Lazarus"? Some of the scary terminal rot that you have turned into healthy new steel is amazing. Is there a whiff of MOT in the air? BTW - too lazy to get the get the schematic out - why wouldn't she start without tbreak fluid cap wires attached? I am guessing this a P6 safety feature?

Car was already MOT'd until January.

The fluid cap is a well know one. The earths are common normally what happens is that the wires corrode or fall off. If ever the car wont start check your brake fluid.

I bet we would all rather find rusty metal in the sills that man eating spider though

I have been taking the car out most days to put some miles on the clock so I can iron out a few niggles. Other than a few creaks and groans it seems to drive quite well. Already changed the air filter, fuel filter and crank breather, tomorrow I will do the oil and filter.

Thankfully I have a accumulated a box of odd spares so tonights repair was to replace the drivers quarter lights winder.

Got a bit of bad news, my mate who was to let me park the car in his underground space has bought a car of his own so AR J will need to stay on my driveway which has got me in to bother with the good lady as it wasnt the original plan. I have put an ad on car and classic so if you spot it that is the reason. I am quite happy to keep hold of it for a while but if there is someone out there looking for a TAX exempt S then I would do a deal.

Meantime I am going to burn some rubber.

One thing I meant to mention as I hadn't seen it before. there was sheet polythene under my carpets, this explains why the floors and sills were perforated but the carpets were bone dry, is this a new tip?

Good weekend fot AR J.

Took him for a run to get under seal and seamsealer. I wasnt happy with the brakes, I had replaced a pipe which broke when I repaired the inner wing. Also when I was looking into some strange noise didnt think the disc on one side was as clean. Once bled the are much better, you can alway tell of the brakes arent right if the handbrake doesnt work well or points to the sky.

Manaed to get the screen wash pump going and gave the whole car a good polish, managed to polish enough to make the rust stains go away to the point where the car is presentable now.

One for the wierd things list. When I refitted the passenger rear wing I had a spare wire from the lamp but no partner in the loom. I had to check whether the '72 s had 2 reverse lamps. Once Dave3066 confirmed it should I traced the loom back until I found the wire cut where the loom branches for the rear speaker wires. Why? Who knows it doesnt seem like it could have been accidental. Soldered a new wire in, connected the lamp up and nothing happened :*) thinking it was the bulb took the lenses off only to find the remains of a bulb which turned out to be a completely corroded holder. Will have a dig in my spares for one.

Arrived today the reply to my fee paying enquiry with the DVLA.

Turns out AR J was first registered in Salford county borough council. ( explains why he has a bit of an attitude and loves the Stone Roses).

The first owner was The Guardian and Manchester Evening News Ltd.

I will get on tinternet later and check the other POs

Hello Colin,

A truly amazing job that you are doing, turning what for many would be a non starter into a going concern. The progress that you are making is quite astounding and I can see why, your P5B is just lovely.

Ron.

I am on the scrounge.

AR J failed to start today and I was checking the points and that before deciding to bin them and fit the kit I got.

I discovered that the vacum unit isn't operating and I think there may be a spring missing as the base plate moves an awful lot.

Ideally I would send it for reconditioning but old AR J doesn't quite merit that kind expense at the moment, a GSH 35D8 distributor will do for now.

Anyone got a spare?

I did manage to change out the rear lamp unit so AR J now has both reverse lamps working  I wonder if I hadn't fix the light the distributor wouldn't have packed in.

Are you sure that it's not the pin on the bottom of the points not located in the arm from the vac unit?

Will recheck that one.

When I suck on the straw the vacum unit doesnt operate, you just draw air.

Bit of a pain, one thing that bursts me is a car churning over and not starting.

I will recharge the battery and try tomorrow.

Colin

I checked the locating pin and it wasnt in the correct hole.

Tried to fire it up but the battery is too dead to spin the starter fast enough.

Vac unit is definatley dead though.

Think I have got a spare distributor, will probably swap the vac unit over.

For those who have fitted the powerspark kit. Does the module sit evenly all the way around the pick up? The one I got seems to sit slightly further back on one side. I will take a picture tomorrow in day light. The engine runs but I am just curious before I send it back or modify it.

Bit of progress on the dizzy.

Got a spare from Tom but the vac is also done. Dropped an email to H&H who I have used in the past, they can supply a new one for £45 or repair mine for £25. Will get one down this week. They would refurb the dizzy inc new cap and rotor for only 105 so all very reasonable.

Other than that all I managed was to refit carpets and renewed the thread bare earth strap.

The Vac unit came back looking like new yesterday and I got it fitted last night.

I was off today and had the physio, I wanted to take the p6 but it was blocked in by my other cars so went in the vitesse. After that I had a dental check up but had enough time to come home and switch cars to give me a chance to test the vac unit out. My dentist is not far from the garage which does my spray jobs and MOTs so dropped in to show AR J off and book an MOT in for next month.

The screen was not clearing very well and I have a feeling that I will need to get the heater out and check the flaps. It does blow just not enough, fingers cross the bottom is still in one piece.

it has been a week since I drove the car and found that the gears were grinding, though this may have been my grape issue but after a pump or two on the clutch pedal it is ok. It has never inspired me and looking at the slave it is a bit limp. I ordered up a new slave cylinder for £11 delivered so will fit that and see. The grape still needs sorted though.
