Project AR J

Glad you're still making excellent progress. Just looking at your pic's from 5th Dec - Johnstone Town Centre if I'm not mistaken?

Did you survive recent storms OK? As my car is outside, the only problem I had was that my cover blew clean off. Apart from some tearing on the edge of the cover, I can't see any other damage.

Over last few weeks I have seen a youngish bloke driving around in a Triumph 2000 Mk2 (light cream colour). I had a quick chat with him at Linwood Asda car park one night - very enthusiastic and his car looked really nice.

I have seen that Triumph a few times but don't nomally talk to non rover owners :?

I got a bit of fence damage but nothing serious. I normally park up in Houston Square Johnstone and go for a coffee so I can keep a look out for the parking man. The only thing is since the smoking ban the brains trust hang about and it is not the first time one of them has come over to chat so it is park and run.

Got the Jump cables made up today. I got a 16 meter length of welding cable on ebay for £40 inc postage. Some 400amp clamps £15, I have to use a gas torch to get the solder to flow through the joints. They are very heavy and hopefully they will be man enough to jump a P6.

I have left enought cable to make another 2 sets the same length as these, a long set and a short or a really long set. the cable weighs a lot.

Took a few snaps.

New and old

Inside the old clamp you can see how small the copper core in and the clamps is just a small copped jaw riveted to the plastics.

Amazing what difference a good set of leads makes to jumping, with those it will be like you've connected a new battery to the car !

They look the business Colin and should last for ages. Look as though you could use them in Frankenstein's laboratory to conduct lightning :!: :D Those cheapo clips are a bit of a joke - the connections you get are so poor I have seen them heating up when you try a jump start and they usually come apart after a few uses. Also, the square contacts aren't ideal for clipping onto round battery posts. Where did you get the clamps? Just that I was thinking of getting a decent one for my MIG.

It's OK to talk to non-Rover owners. They aren't too different from us - mabe try it sometime :D .

I am not that bad really, I waved at a boy in an Austin 1100 the other week whilst out in the V8. My dad recently acquired a Morris 1000 which he has done 9k miles in about 4 months!!

I got these clamps on ebay but VWP had them at £8 each!!! I did a spark test with them (connected to a battery then joined the other ends) the spark was so big I almost made a whoopsie. The cheapo HD ones were poor hardly any spark, one cable also melted out of the clamp and I had to solder it back on. I have enough cable to make another long set or 2 short ones.

Took AR J for the MOT today, should I tell you how it got on or do you want to post up a few guesses?

Colin

I am guessing that you passed? Go on, tell me and make me feel really miserable about my lack of MOT :?:

Passed of course, I was impressed with the brake results. The front balance was 1% I asked was it good and he said you can have up to 25% :D

Advisories were
3 for slight corrossion on the brake hose ferrules
2 for slight corrosion on the front brake discs
1 for seamsealer on the welded areas.

To celebrate I took him to Glasgow and drove about in the most appauling rain and wind did a quick 100 miles.

Good news or sad news is that I have just taken him on a test drive and a nice man from Dundee has given me a deposit to collect him on Saturday.

Well done. That is good news. It is good that you managed to take what was pretty much a basket case and get her back on the road. Hopefully, the new owner will look after her and many more years of motoring shall ensue.

I've enjoyed seeing the progress you've made with the car over the course of your ownership, and it's nice to know it's found a new home after all of your hard work! :D

AR J was never going to be a long term ownership.

This will leave me to get working on "Poppy" the 2200tc my first p6 project which has lasted 10 years due to being put on the back burner for a house move and project that inc a sd1, p5b, mini, 2 p6 I owned an a p6 belonging to a friend. Poppy needs some light welding, doors refitting and a load of minor stuff but really just because it has been sat outside.

I hadn't planned to do as much work on AR J but it has reminded me how nice it is working on a P6 and also driving one again so all good.

I enjoy working on the cars but the fleet needs to be reasonable. My 2200tc will be my all year round car, P5b good weather car and two moderns. Need to try and sell the vitesse first and avoid temptation of other cars ;-)

I still want to get a few jobs on AR J before he goes. The brake warning lamp which will be an electrical thing and when the car is initially started it runs like the timing is out for a few minutes then it is perfect. I have two theories, either there is a poor positive feed (the cables at the starter are a bit green) or the power spark module is faulty.

I told Paul the new owner about the forum, but other than tidying the car I haven't left him much to do.

ARJ will be one of my neighbours , will try to keep an eye out at local events.

Been a great thread Colin...really enjoyed it.

..if he's a P6 owner worth his salt, he'll find loads to do.

Good luck with the rest of the fleet...look forward to seeing Poppy's Progress!

Cheers guys,

Hopefully the new owner will join the forum, it really is a must.

AR J apparently has a garage to live in at is new home, I have a list of outstanding niggles which were included FOC :D Not sure how far the guy wants to go as it is a first classic. I would perhaps tidy it and drive it for now but each to there own.

Going to start collecting bits for Poppy, she donated a few parts to AR J and a few new parts that were being saved. Poppy was last on the road 2003/2004. I reckon if I can pull this work together then I should be able to get my finger out. Need to change roof, build up the doors, soem welding and other little bits. Really have ran out of excuses.

Will be sorry to lose a car with Historic tax. in fact I hope it snows badly and I have to keep the car til January just so i can go to the Post office for a disc at no cost.

Well guys the car is now being driven home by Paul but not without a major hissy fit this morning.

I got up early to check the starting issue. I needed to make sure it was nothing sinister, so check the plugs and compression tested and all was good.

The new owner called me from te train and he was about 30mins away and the car refused to start. I sent him to a nice coffee shop and got my head under the bonnet. I eventually figured that the power spark unit was gubbed. The orginal points were binned but I did have a spare distibutor so took the points off it, cleaned them up and then lost them, yup between my kitchen and the car which is about 10feet they have vanished. Plan B was to take the unit off my P5 but that is a different base plate.

I picked paul up and discussed the options, my least favoured was to take the distributor from the p5 and fit it but with no other options thats what happened, put it in tweaked the timing and AR J or B***£*d as he was known as today ran sweet as a nut.

I will get the P5 unit back in a few days and Paul will either get some points or another module. I am a bit let down by the power spark unit.
