RSR/Rover P6 Club National Rally, 28-30th June 2013

I'm surprised the news footage didn't show the 100 plus P6s and others in the field next door! It made it look like an informal gathering of only a few cars.

The official DVD will hopefully show all.

Couldn't resist shooting my 2000 on the plot prior to the start of set up on the (overcast and wet) Friday morning.

Driving test activities shot (with permission) from the roof of Gaydon on the Saturday.

After the huge amount of work and grief put into this event, having cars in four of the five launch colours out the front of Gaydon suddenly made me realise why it's all worth it. L to R - Paul Smith's City Grey 149FLK, Alan Francis's Copperleaf, my Rover White car, and Chris Wilson's Wedgie.

Sadly no chance of the missing fifth colour - Willow Green - I had written to every known owner beforehand to try and get one of them there - I estimate there could be as little as one car in the strange green/yellow left on the road in the UK.

Shame about the camper in the background!

Inside the museum Brian Humphries had arranged a little access to T4, the mother of all P6's (or at least, the oldest the breed).

The long awaited Sunday event was a complete monster. I never got out onto the main field at all, but did manage to fulfill a dream by getting 15 pre-1967 2000's lined up, including the four oldest cars on the road (both FLK's, Brenda's gold 2000 and Alan Francis's Copperleaf).

30thJune201347640x480.jpg

We had a couple of very distinguished Rover guests, including Rob Lyall, ex-Rover Engineering, who drove many of the famous prototypes in anger's 1965 2000 which is fitted with genuine Rover Rally kit, taken out of the skip at Solihull circa 1966, and still in use.

Chris York pulled off a masterpiece of organisation to get a large contingent of ex-Rover staff to Coughton, and then to get them to pose for photos in front of the house. The press were lapping it up and I can't wait to see the professional photos of this.

The amount of cars on the main field was breathtaking. I've not seen anything like this since the fabled Ragley Hall event in 2004, and I think we actually broke the all time attendance record for an RSR event, and probably had the biggest selection of P6's in one place since the P6ROC bash at Blenheim in 2003, if not before that. 112 the official count now!

Lots more will follow in 'Driving Force', no doubt, there were a lot of better photographers than me making merry.

In all, a bit of a Rover triumph with a small 't' and with some unforgettable moments. Well worth the severe amount of work put in.

It was amazing to see so many P6's in one place, well done to you guys organising it, and to whoever sorted the weather out, trust me to forget my cap, and sun cream. But I did think, that's one of the reasons I got married, Mrs Happy Days was reprimanded, but not too severely this time :D

112!!

I have never seen so many P6s in one place, in fact I don't think I have ever seen so many P6s, ever!

Very well done all who organised this breathtaking event.

Can't wait to see the video.

Brilliant - so glad I managed to get there.

Richard

PS - I even managed to get a complete set of black furflex for Sparky to replace the old dyed ones which are fading.

Wow - I mean WOW!!! - just loved this one

Very nice too - claimed to be the only Rover built convertable

Bruiser - tastefully done too

Some idea of the scale of this show

Sparky had a busy weekend - here he is in Whitby on Friday getting wetter and wetter, Saturday he spent the day at Goathland railway station (that's the station in Heartbeat and Hogwarts in Harry Potter) as part of the 70's weekend, then down to Coughton on Sunday.

Just back home now, we cheated and stayed overnight giving us a lovely leisurely drive through the Cotswolds today. This of course meant I was able to treat the mem sahib to the morning at Hidcote Manor gardens and lunch at the Oxford pub where Morse recites the poem The Remorseful Day in the final episode, somewhere she'd always wanted to go. Sunshine, empty roads, peaceful countryside and a rattling Rover it don't get much better.

I would like to echo the thanks to all those who organised, arranged, sweated and generally grafted to give us such a superb day out. The weather was the icing on the cake. Both the P6 Club and the RSR are to be congratulated for their respective efforts.

Special thanks to those who decided I should be awarded the 'Spirit of the National' cup or as one wag put it as I was walking back from the presentation "You should break down more often mate" Touche! :D :D Our arrival was eh em how can i put it 'delayed' but i will try and get an article together detailing the "warts an all" of our adventures cos although we made it there were times................as Churchill said "Never, never, NEVER give up"

An honour indeed to be lined up with Chris Wilson, Nick Dunning and Paul Smiths cars at Gaydon and as for the driving tests...well great fun and an eye opener but in my defence I was hampered by the special Rover "jump out of reverse as soon as you put it in" gearboxes. Well done Duncan for winning the event.

Nice to put some names to faces, though inevitably I wasn't able to get round and see all the cars and chat to all the people though I did sell some shiny bits to Mr Pilkie. had a great chat with Paul Smith of FLK fame who was exceptionally helpful in pointing out those areas where my '63 car is 'incorrect' I'm sure he won't mind me saying he is an absolute stickler for originality and won't have a single item on his car that wouldn't have been there when it left the factory. I have to admit I'm the same though have had to accept 'non-original' in order to get me about for the present but hopefully as time goes on....

Both badges are superb so looks like a clamp-on badge bar on its way.

Can't wait for next year....

Alan

Pssssst ............. Cmon then how much does Mr Wearing want for his Marauder? Anyone got an idea?

46 years old and 8k miles ? Does it go everywhere on a trailer?
You have to ask if there's much point having a car and not getting the enjoyment of driving it

I'll see if I can sit Lady C next to it and show it what sort of mileage a D reg 2000 is capable of :D

Dave

Mission accomplished  and no it didn't arrive on a trailer! Lady C covered twice as many miles in the last year as this car has covered in its entire life........and it shows.

This car is absolutely stunning and it was a real pleasure chatting to Denis.

We had a fantastic weekend. Lady C drove impeccably as always, covering 676 miles at a very respectable 32mpg. I've put a report in Lady C's thread rather than filling this one with more photos. Suffice to say the event was quite simply staggering in its scale. I've never seen so many P6s in one place. Well done to all of the organisers and those who heped on the day.

Dave

All I can say is what a great day ! :D well done to all the organisers :D I am glad I made the effort ,myself and MikeP had fun getting home ,but it was worth it :D

Jane and I had a great day meeting you all too. Well done to all the organisers and especially Nick for bringing all the significant early cars together and sorting out the weather too - I need to be a bit more diligent with the sun cream in future as I now have a red square on my right foot!

You and me both Paul, my forehead is still sore. :(

Did you come in the V8?

I looked for Hotty but couldn't see it so guessed you came in the V8

Alan

Yes, I was in the V8. Hotty now has a sound base unit and MOT and I had intended to bring it, but I left in my mother in laws garage whilst I moved house last week and she went on holiday so I couldn't get it out!

Your car looked fantastic in the early car line up though.

On the way , Met up with Mike p and followed him in . I had to stop and pay my entry fee , Didn't see you again all day . Nice to say hi though :D

Nice to meet you too Stina, although briefly, my apologies I didn't bump into you again  I did a lot of walking and saw familiar cars but no owners, obviously wandering around as well; although I did bump into Richard (Rockdemon) on the narrow stairs in the house and Paul(Testrider) right at the very end. I guess thats what happens when you have 110 P6s on display :D

I headed down to Coughton on the Sunday with Richie Retroman. Me being in RVW, and him in the Tangerine Shed.

Too good a photo opportunity to miss.

The FLK's

Not sure how the Porsche and Jaguar passed as a Rover though.

I really enjoyed myself at Coughton, it was nice to put faces to names. I would also like to thank all the organisers that made this perfect event. Just remember to bring a knife for 75th Birthday Cake :p :p :p
