shockie comparisons

Sounds good, I'm fine with paying for the batch on my card if needed and then you could transfer to me by paypal.

Cheers,

Al

When are you guys thinking of ordering some?

I have just bought an engagement ring so money is a bit thin on the ground at the moment. :|

Buying an engagement ring is silly. It's the giving it to someone else that I've never come to terms with! :D I do hope she likes cars.

I trust congratulations are in order then! Well done! :D :D :D

Chris

I have sent you a PM Geoff... :D

Yes indeed, a pair of overalls for working alongside you on the Rover and helping out in the cab when you are driving a steam engine... :D

Top stuff,
Ron.

hahaha, yes I agree about rings and things like that but she doesn't wear much jewelry and this is my chance to give her something back for putting up with the cars and bikes and car magazines and books everywhere and the grease I leave on door handles by accident and all the other things I do that must drive her nuts that she doesn't say anything about.

She had a mk1 two door cortina as her first car so she's a bit into cars and bikes and blokey stuff so that's a massive plus. It's the part where she wants to get her own motorcycle license that I worry...

(plus I figure that if she gets a nice ring, I should buy myself another wristwatch  )

Ok...I'm ready too.
So thats two of us...will that qualify a discount?
I will email and find out.
Let you know soon.

I have just bought a pair of the Avo front shocks. they look very good but the mountings are different.

I will be attempting to fit them soon

hmmmm, that sounds interesting. Is it just the bushes in the shock mount that are different?

The red plastic is quite hard and I would assume is a high shore PU of some description. And there is a metal sleeve inside of it which would make it even more difficult to compress.

I'll have a play later and see if it will fit as it is, or whether it will fit with the Poly bushes I currently have on the old ones.

Yes...please do Richard... I am/was about 24 hrs from ordering, so it would be good to iron out any foibles now. :)

I managed to get one of the old ones off tonight. The shock mounting rubber/plastic is around 5mm wider than the original and has the metal insert so will not compress to fit.

The mounting eye of the shock is a lot smaller too so won't in my opinion grip the old Polybush either

I don't quite know what to do, apart from phoning the supplier tomorrow

Phoning the supplier sounds an excellent plan.

I really don't like the idea of the steel sleeve. That is certain to rattle against the mounting pin, and after rattling for a bit, wearing through. I could live with the "plastic" bush. But it will make the low speed ride very harsh. And the only experience I've had with that sort of bushing has been in my top link brackets and that was not good at all.

Mmmm...

This was the response from AVO when I notified them that there seemed to be some differences in the mounts of their shocks compared to the original;

brenten

not ure that we have had a problem, our front units are all loop loop mounts with 5/8 bore 1.5" in length

there is always the possibility thre may be some cars which are different, but all i sell are the 5/8 x 1.5" if you have something different, let me know, i am sure we can change it

For those to work you would need a nut & washer on the mounting stub, I'm sure I've seen this done before somewhere.

The tube still needs to be fairly close fit to the stub, is it ?

Dear Sirs

The shock absorbers below, do NOT fit my car.

I have attached some photos to show what I mean.

The original shocks have rubber mounts which fit over the mounting pins on the car. The upper ones are the secured by a thick washer and Nyloc which compresses the rubber to hold it securely.

The lower fitting is pushed over the pin and is held by a large washer and a split pin.

There is also a metal sleeve inside the red plastic mountings which would stop it being compressed.

101_1605.jpg

As you can see from the pictures, the upper mounting is far too wide and with the washer on, the nut will not go on sufficiently to allow the Nyloc to work. I could probably force it on and just do the nut up but this would crush the metal sleeve and would not, in my opinion, be safe.

The lower one is worse, as the red plastic mount is actually already wider than its fixing position, and would need to compressed around 4mm to pass the fixing hole (inner one), and another 4mm to allow the washer to be fitted and yet another 3-4 mm to get the split pin in. This would be impossible even without the sleeve.

Also, the inner measurement of the sleeve is 15.78mm, whereas the outer measurement of the pins are 16.75mm so they will not go over the pins anyway.

I could do with some help here as I have the car up on jacks with no front wheels at the moment.

Regards

Richard
