SNOW

imagine the insurance claim.

"yeah front end damaged"
"were you driving?"
"ere not exactly"

LMAO

They do reckon that most drivers of 1 series think they are front wheel drive

It is an oddly packaged little car isnt it. They're quiet and refined but not as roomy or as airy as a focus or astra for instance. RWD works on bigger cars as the space lost isnt missed as much....

A guy at work wants to sell his after the snow the other week.

Rich.

"Believe it or not, 80 percent of BMW 1-series owners
believe they are driving a front-wheel-drive car."
BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer, 22 March 2010

hi all,
just showed it to my wife as she owns and drives a 120D auto. straight away she said what are the snow chains doing on the front. just shows you some times !!!!!!!

Having never been a devotee of the stylised propeller in any way whatsoever (partly because everyone & his dog seems to own or want one), I didn't know they only made RWD cars & also wouldn't have spotted the mistake.
Still, they are the biggest phallic symbols on the road aren't they? The drivers that is, not the cars!

I thought BMW's were bought as a p*nis enlargers on wheels for the insecure/inadequate driver ?
3 series are more common than Ford Mundanos these days

Sister has a 1 series, last year she literally couldn't go anywhere in it during the snow, totally useless. I also saw at least 4 BMW's stuck in driveways and on hill starts. Mercs no better and a few friends with RX8's daren't take them out in the snow either.

Of course my "crappy old rover" (820 that is) never missed a beat and got me everywhere I wanted to go. Holding up well this year too, although the speedo has put in a protest in the last two very cold days.

On the subject of assumptions though, I assumed most recent Audi's were Quattro's, mainly because the boss always had quattros, but they're not

While I drove my last P6B through two winters and 'nailed' most traction-controlled RWDs all over town in most situations thanks to the de Dion etc. I tended to feel rather good about myself, especially since the M+S tyres were Euro spec, ie. harder and less grippy than Nordic issue ones. So as a RWD winter car, the P6 is good, to be sure.

I also feel good about my 3 series TDSA which, owing to a LSD and proper winter shoes gets me by where very, very many other cars hug poles for safety. I actually don't feel phallic about it at all. As a student in London I rode for the competitor company of Scooterman (Drive U Home) for a year, and got to drive all manner of luxury, sports and SUV vehicles. I can safely say that while I've not driven enough cars to state it categorically, I will claim that the E36 is unsurpassed for total driving experience, response and overall balance in a regular mid-size sedan. So I went and got one. Why yuppies want one is another matter... 8)

Edit: If winters keep cold like the last two years, here's a tip for your spare set of steels: Contact these guys and ask them for a set of Nordic-spec studless winter tyres, such as Nokian Hakkapeliitta R. Refer to the fact that they have divisions in Scandinavia and they should be able to sort you out...

Loosely related old joke time...........

I told my Mum I had purchased a BMW. She looked shocked.
"Oh, how could you go and buy a German car like that after all your Grandfather went through during the war?"

"Sorry Mum" I said. "I didn't realise that Grandad saw a lot of fighting."

"He didn't, he just owned a string of crap, unreliable German cars!!!"

BOOM BOOM!!

I believe that all A8s and 'Allroads' are quattros, but not that many others.

My A6 is a quattro and is exceptionally good in the snowy weather. I drove through the snow in our yard which was 4" deeper than the ground clearance, (playing snow ploughs  ) and reversed up to the door without any sign of slipping at all. You can see how the front valance has been pushing the snow away.

It could do with narrower tyres and more ground clearance.

Now that's an opinion that's rarely expressed... the narrower tyres would help fuel consumption too of course!

Poor PAE - naked in the snow.... Again :)

It's not that RWD is crap in the snow it's just that FWD is better. There was a time
when FWD was new fangled. The problem as Quattro says is wide tyres they can't
cut through the snow like narrower ones.

I think Audi are over-using the name Quattro these days.

After all, there is only ONE Quattro!

I will have a UR one day when I have the space for it, meanwhile I am very happy with my A6 quattro. I must admit my old 2.8 A4 quattro was more fun, but it was difficult driving it sensibly.

Richard

I did some work on a UR Quattro recently, nice car, but this one had been modified, and then modified again, and was a bit of a mess under the bonnet, alledgedly made huge BHP but as is so often the case all the bodged wiring was causing all sorts of problems.

Boss had an S2 (20v UR engine), then an RS4 (heavily tuned V6 version) which buckled 2 or 3 sets of wheels, then an RS6 which again was heavily tuned, this one destroyed its gearbox and had to have all the mods removed so he could claim a new box on the warranty, he then went all Hairdresser and bought a Maserati Quattroporte.

It's all very well having 4 wheel drive for extra traction but it doesn't make you stop any faster if you only have road tyres
You could get lulled into a state of false security - think you can go anywhere - and then find you can't stop
